Spend a semester at SLC, and you’ll have trouble imagining class without the Internet. While some professors still do things the old-fashioned way, most require students to make weekly postings on message boards, as well as to check their email on a daily basis. If you’re not computer literate when you arrive, then you will be before you leave. Most students bring laptops (PCs and Macs, but most students prefer Macs), and it’s not unusual to see students typing thesis reports while tanning on the North Lawn or eating waffles at Bates Dining Hall’s brunch. If you plan to rely on the College computers, beware: terminals are limited. Fortunately, the lab is regularly staffed by helpful, computer-savvy students. There are also specialized labs in the science center and Heimbold Visual Arts Center for computer science and film students.

Likewise, if you’re having technical problems with your personal computer, head to the Academic Computing office, where computer technicians will try to repair your computer free of charge. Ethernet is in every dorm room, computer terminals are fast and easy to access, and the school curriculum offers computer science, graphic design, and digital storytelling courses. Wireless Internet is available throughout campus. Get in touch with Academic Computing for advice on gaining access.
