Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

SLC’s Heimbold Visual Arts Center is one of the largest buildings on campus and houses a 188-seat movie theater used for classes as well as special guest lecturers. Although aesthetically pleasing, some student artists feel the school overlooked necessary architectural functions for an art building in order for the space to be deemed green and eco-friendly by the state of New York. Another facility widely enjoyed by students is the Campbell Sports Center, which houses a full gym, basketball court, swimming pool, yoga and fencing studio, rowing tanks, and squash courts.

The absence of a student center has been a nagging issue in student life for decades. Despite renovations to improve public student spaces in Bates, the building remains underused, in part because of its location on campus, in part because of the small capacities of its spaces. However, one of the building’s main social functions is hosting dance parties in the basement, the Blue Room, or both simultaneously! If dancing isn’t your scene, the Teahaus and Slonim often offer small concerts or poetry readings. One problem that has arisen in recent years is the major lack of handicapped accessible pathways, doors, and dormitories; this, too, is being addressed through renovations. Many classrooms and public spaces have also become dilapidated—come springtime, as ice melts atop roofs, a handful of unlucky students will wind up with leaky ceilings. Still, most students agree that the rustic look of main campus is one of its charms.

Everything the Liberal Arts Student Needs.

Our classrooms/gym/labs/studios/e.t.c are all fully functional, clean, and up-to-date. We have some of the coolest vintage Moog synths in our electronic music studio. We have an Early Childhood Center on campus so that students here can study and work with kids of pre-school/elementary school ages first-hand. We're also near NYC so access to everything is easy.

So Many Great Spaces

Dining is great, the library is one of the best I've ever seen, the gym has everything you could want, lots of student spaces (for food, entertainment, downtime, socializing, etc.). Also a great art gallery and other student-art spaces. Everywhere is beautiful, easily accessible, and comfortable. One of the greatest things about this place.

The Campus Is Gorgeous.

Being a writing student, the facility I've used most is the library. It's pretty decently sized and the resources are fabulous. The campus used to basically be a manor, so it's wonderful. It looks very old fashioned from the outside, but the buildings are modernized on the inside. The campus is nice and green and looks gorgeous both during the fall and spring semesters.

Favorite Things To Do

Every day, the College Events office emails you a list of the day's goings-on around campus. Keep on top of that, and you'll stay occupied. Students can see a performance at the PAC, catch a quality flick courtesy of Sarah Lawrence Activities Council, cheer the Gryphons at the Campbell Sports Center, or shoot pool in a student tournament at the Black Squirrel.

The theater department puts on performances every weekend, most of which are booked up in advance (sign up for seats in the PAC lobby as soon as the posters go up around campus). Sarah Lawrence Activities Council (SLAC) loads weekends with movie screenings, live music, dances, and open mics. Every Friday night, there's Midnight Cabaret in Titsworth.

Did You Know? Tourists have been known to visit SLC just to peek inside the beautiful, neo-Tudor, Westlands building, located on the North Lawn.
