Social Scene
With a small student body and insular campus, it's hard not to know everyone's business. But even though that can seem like a negative, it actually fosters a stronger sense of community. The social scenes may overlap, individual spheres that all coexist and intermingle at the large social functions, but more often than not, they keep to themselves.
Hookups or Relationships?
The imbalance of guys to girls means that only the smallest effort is required of a guy to score with a hot girl. Guys seem conscious of this and, inevitably, take advantage of it, opting to remain single and enjoy regular hookups. For relationships, girls often turn to NYC, using Internet dating services or parties at larger universities as a jumpoff.
Dress Code
Campus often looks like a fashion show of 1960's hippie stereotypes-dreadlocks, bushy hair, sideburns, loose-fitting hemp shirts and skirts, leather sandals and clogs, bead necklaces, plain T-shirts, and ripped-up jeans. Also ubiquitous is the hipster image-a combo of ill-fitting vintage clothing, oddball jewelry, custom tattoos, graphic print T-shirts, and whatever your hair looked like when you rolled out of bed that morning. And there's a reason why one of SLC's slogans is "Sarah Lawrence College: where even the squirrels wear black." Yes, there are black squirrels, but the man-in-black style is all over the place.
