Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The major attraction of living off campus at any college is the chance to have your own room. But at SLC, getting a single is easy after your sophomore year. Students can stay on campus and enjoy all the privacy of an off-campus apartment without the hassle of transportation, bills, landlords, and isolation.

That being said, some students do relocate off campus after their freshman year. This is a popular move amongst transfer students who may not feel well-connected to the SLC community. Renting a room in Mount Vernon is undoubtedly more serene than sharing a kitchen counter with seven sloppy kids in Slonim Woods. In an off-campus apartment, you won’t be subject to SLC’s security guard invasions, but you may have neighbors who are less than tolerant of hearing Wavves blasted at odd hours of the night. If you’re considering living off campus, get in touch with SLC Housing for advice and area listings. Check the Internet and make some cold calls to get rates. Off-campus housing is not always cheaper than living on campus when transportation, food, and entertainment costs are factored in. If you’re going to drive from your apartment to campus, you’re going to need to buy a parking permit; if you’re coming from the city, you’ll need to pre-order bulk train tickets. Finally, ask yourself if you’re willing to sacrifice the tumultuous and often gratifying once-in-a-lifetime experience of living in a college dormitory.

Not Much Off-Campus Housing.

There's some off-campus apartments and houses. When students split the rent, it ends up being cheaper than on-campus housing. I don't know much about it since I've been living on campus, but I've never heard anyone who lives off-campus complain about it.

It Exists, but Is Expensive.

You can find housing off campus, and student affairs helps you with the off campus housing guide. But its often more expensive than its worth, and parking is always an issue in New York.

No matter how much you love your car, expect it to get beat up.

Plenty to Choose from.

I've lived off campus for two years now and couldn't be happier about it. There are a ton of apartments within walking distance to campus, plus, if you live in Bronxville you can take advantage of the shuttle that runs from the train station to Westlands Gate. There is no trade off in living off campus - it's very easy to stay involved in campus life. Parking isn't great, so I leave my car on campus, but it's only a 10 minute walk.
