Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Sports are not a large part of Scripps life, unless you choose to become involved. Unlike at large universities, there is not a huge emphasis on games and rallies. There are a good number of Scripps students on teams, but sports are for the most part not their main priority. However, for students who are serious about sports or just enjoy playing and watching, there are plenty of opportunities and resources. The small student body makes it possible for everyone who is interested in sports to become involved.

Scripps has a joint sports team with Claremont McKenna and Harvey Mudd (CMS). Scripps supports all of the standard teams, as well as women’s lacrosse and intramural women’s rugby. There’s even a 5C ultimate Frisbee team called the Brain Eaters. Because of the small populations at each of the Claremont colleges, Scripps, CMC, and Harvey Mudd join forces to form the Athenas and Stags, while Pomona and Pitzer team up as the Sagehens. Both teams compete in the Division III Southern California division. The team spirit and support from the general student body is not always that great in that sports events are not widely attended, but the small following is very loyal.

If You Are Really Into It, This Is Probably Not the Place

I don't have any particular interest in Athletics so I never cared about that factor when I was choosing colleges. I don't know much but I do know that there are two intercollegiate teams. Scripps is part of CMS - Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College and Scripps College. And the other intercollegiate team is PP - Pomona and Pitzer College. There are wide variety of teams and sports to play here but the fan support is pretty low, it's pretty much your friends who will go to your games and the handful of people from the colleges who love that particular sport. Football does get crowded though because there is homecoming and what not. Facility wise, I think the athletic facilities are great because I have never heard anyone complaining about it. However, if you want to go to a college for a great sports scene, I suggest you tour Scripps and ask around and check out the type of sports scene we have because I think it's not that exciting.

Small School, Combined Athletics

Since I go to the all girls school, and the schools in our 5 college consortium are small the schools Harvey Mud, Scripps (my school) and Claremont Mckenna combine to make a sports team. We can use eachothers facilities, play on the same teams, interact with those from the different schools, and work together. It's nice because it is a chance to meet people from other schools that you might not meet other wise and it brings a sense of unity to the schools. Since athletis are not a main part of the schools the fan base is not broad but the students do support eachother. However, there could be more school spirit. Athletics is important to those incolved in them but not very much so to students that are not. There is something for everyone though. There are many intermurals and varsity sports and the range is wide which is nice.

School Spirit

Because sports do not have as strong of a presence at Scripps as at many large schools, school spirit is not typically characterized and expressed through teams, and most sporting events do not attract large crowds. Rather, students are very involved in the school and are constantly active in running and improving it. Many students comment that they show their school spirit through the way that they influence the outside world and through the changes that they can make in their lives. School spirit at Scripps is not blatant or rowdy, but there is clear love and loyalty. Traditions are upheld and respected, and students truly feel that the school is theirs. Students show off unique signature Scripps gear and the student store sells endearing objects with prints such as “Women on Top,” “My sister goes to Scripps,” or “My girlfriend goes to Scripps.” As a consortium, all five colleges share a sense of Claremont pride, and the group is often referred to with the stereotype of the characters of the cartoon Scooby Doo. Students may criticize and poke fun at the other campuses and Claremont in general, but they become vehemently defensive if such comments are made by people outside of Claremont.
