College Prowler Take
On-campus living at Scripps is definitely not typical dorming. You will encounter hardly any dorming complaints, and improvements are constantly being made. Students are very respectful and appreciative of the dorms, and make a conscious effort to take care of their living space to keep it as nice as they found it. There are dorms that are preferred less than others, but there are no dorms deemed unlivable or hated by students. Each and every living space is made to accommodate to students’ well being and provide a comfortable learning environment. Most dorms have more space than any other college-living space, and comfort is a top priority. All dorm buildings are unique, with not any one like another. Each has its own personality as well as attitude and atmosphere. Beauty and elegance is not lost to efficiency and convenience, as each dorm’s architecture has been inspired by historical art influence, giving somewhat of an old and classical feel, but with the modern comforts of Ethernet, heaters, and air-conditioning. From the antique structural design to the beautiful old furniture and scenic courtyards, Scripps dormitories truly do live up to their reputation of being palace-like dorms, following founder Ellen Browning Scripps’s belief that beauty will help inspire beauty.

The dorms are the nicest that I saw while looking at colleges. All are very unique, and each has a living room with a grand piano and sitting area.

Right now (Fall 2008) Scripps is going through a major housing crunch. As a sophomore, my friends and I were almost forced to live off campus. Seniors have first pick of dorms, which I understand; however, during this situation (which the administration DID anticipate), it would have made more sense to have sophomores and juniors choose first.

All the dorms are comparatively nice. There are old dorms and newer ones, and it just depends on where you prefer to live. The older dorms don’t have air-conditioning, but they have personality, and the new dorms have air-conditioning, but less personality. |

The ‘old dorms’ built in the 1930s are some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to, and even the newer dorms, built around the 1970s, are palatial compared to any other college’s dorms. |

Since Scripps is a women’s college, all the dorms are relatively nice. They all have courtyards, though some are more accessible than others, and they each have their own personality. Of course, there are a few that many people would avoid, but each has its own special charm depending on what you like. |
