Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are no sororities or fraternities in Claremont, and if that is an issue to you, then Scripps is definitely not the right school for you. The fact that Greek life is non-existent at Scripps has never been an issue to the students and it is rather a factor that most students appreciate. It is rare to find a student at Scripps who does not have multiple majors and minors, or is not active and involved in several organizations or interest groups on and off campus, and so generally there is neither time nor need for a sorority. The top concern for the majority of student at Scripps is academics, and the little spare time that each woman has is usually devoted to an organization of interest or hobby.

The concept of a sorority is not at all important to any of the students here, and although many people have referred to Scripps as one large sorority, exclusivity is not a quality held high on campus, as sisterhood and health of mind and body are principles stressed by Scripps. It can be said that the students find enough support and all that a sorority would offer in each other and the student body as a whole, so there is no desire for the presence of Greek life.

Hardly Greek Life, Schoosl Are Like Frats and Sororities Themselves

There is no official Greek life at Scripps or the other Claremont Colleges. Since the schools are so small they are like frats and sororities themselves. The schools have stereotypes themselves. As for social atmoshpere, we have great social atmoshpere because the schools are so intertwined and the parties that go on are usually open to all of the students from ay school. There are a few unofficial frats that throw parties as well but no one views them differently because they are "greek" life. It is all pretty cohesive at Scripps and the Claremont Colleges

I think Pomona College has one frat. I can't think of anything they do; they don't have a house. And that's it for Greek life at the Claremont Colleges.

Some people joke that Scripps College is like one big soriety just because it's a very small all-women's college, but that's not at all true. (At least not based off of the soriety stereotypes I know!) The all-women's atmopshere is amazing; I love the community here. Everyone is so nice and supportive of everyone else. And, of course, you can still find boys simply by walking 10 minutes to another campus... or just by going to the dining hall.
