Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students in Claremont feel completely safe and secure on campus both during the day and at night. Everyone is advised to not be out alone during late hours of the night, but the distance between campuses is very short so it is not a major concern amongst students, even though it probably should be. Most crimes that occur in Claremont are relatively small and occur off campus or on the outskirts of campus at night when security is more plentiful and patrols are on duty all around campus. There are emergency call towers throughout the campuses, and Campus Safety will escort anyone at any time that they feel necessary, whether it be because they feel unsafe or otherwise; reasons are never required and questions are never asked. All Scripps dorms require ID card access as well as individual keys for dorm rooms. None of the dorms have doors outside of card access buildings, with exception to the dorm-apartments. Also, all guests must be escorted by a Scripps student into the dorms, and no guest may wander about in the dorms unaccompanied by a student.

Security is taken very seriously at all five campuses, but most students will agree that the degree of safety is stressed even more so at Scripps. This could be perhaps because it is a women’s college or due to the fact that the Campus Security building is located on Scripps campus. All freshmen attend a safety meeting that has become an orientation tradition during which they are taught to memorize the security emergency number and receive a “rape whistle” that will alert and warrant the response of all students and personnel.

Claremont Is Totally Safe

The colleges have their own army of campus safety officers who patrol every party. However, their focus is to prevent harm rather than bust underage drinkers. Crime is almost non existant, and students are notorious for leaving their laptops in the open when they leave for a moment. I would still recommend exercising caution though, because there are the occasional reports of petty thefts and uncomfortable encounters with sketchy people from off campus. If you take basic security measures you should be fine though.

Very Safe

I feel very comfortable walking around campus at night. There is a great presence of campus safety officers that are always willing to escort you and the knowledge that they are around provides a high level of comfort.

Completely Safe

I've never felt at risk at this campus. Campus safety is always available to give you a ride, whether it's across campus or a few miles away at off-campus apartments. The campus is extremely contained, and any present locals pose no threat.
