Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Claremont is a quiet, old-fashioned town that loves education and tradition. The local atmosphere is very peaceful and conducive to learning. Many have dubbed the city to be a bubble in which students are surrounded by quaint beauty and old customs. Most students will say that there is really nothing for young people to do in Claremont, and this is pretty much true. There are only two local popular bars, no large shopping centers or clubs, and the only downtown area (the Village), is made up of a very limited variety of restaurants and stores. Everything shuts down soon after night falls, and while the local Village area is charming, it is geared more towards families and the elderly, the main inhabitants of the city.

This being so, the Colleges usually have to be careful when parties are thrown that the noise level does not warrant a complaint from surrounding neighborhoods. During the past years, it has been expected at every popular and well-publicized party that there will be an early shut down, which is unfortunate and has become quite aggravating to students. After all, this is a college town, and the campuses are very conscientious and well conducted for all but three or four days a month. The lack of social venues and community restrictions result in most Scripps students leaving campus on the weekends, and it is known that most who can, do. Some go to Upland and nearby cities for fast food and to hang out at coffee shops, others head towards the LA area for shopping, dancing, and other entertaining things to do.

Peaceful and Plentiful

Claremont is a very cute little town, and is well named for the city of PhDs. The town works hard to keep chain restaurants out, so for the most part you will find well run small town shops. The food is actually better than I expected, from Thai to Italian you won't be disappointed. The shopping isn't ideal, but there are a couple places where you can get what you need and there are malls near by. Claremont was named by Forbes as one of the top 5 best places to live in the country, so as you can imagine the city is very safe. Because it's a smaller town they really appreciate the students.

Suburban Quaintness Near a Sprawling City

Claremont is a picturesque suburban city frequented by well-educated, middle-upper class families. The Village is known for its Sunday farmer's market, locally-owned shops, and its walkable accessibility. It is the absolute perfect place for a romantic date or family outing. That said, there are few bars in the area, so most students opt for campus nightlife, and a few traverse to nearby Los Angeles.

Overall, the relationship between the Colleges and the city at large is positive- in the first week of school, shops are invited to campus to represent their businesses, and most bring gifts like magnets and pens for students. Many businesses provide student discounts and some even accommodate Claremont Cash (the Claremont Colleges' answer to a campus-based debit card) as an option for payment.

Small, Family-Oriented Community

Most of the college life is centered on campus and on the other 4 Claremont Colleges, but the Claremont Village is just a short walk off campus. There are restaurants, a movie theater, shops, cafes, and farmers markets a couple times per week. There are often families out and about, especially on weekends. Farther away are larger cities such as Pasadena and Los Angeles, with even more to do.
