Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Housing on Scripps is guaranteed for all four years, and most students take advantage of this. After the first year, housing is done lottery style by class level, and usually all students end up with single rooms by their junior year. One option for students who want to get away from dorm life is the Senior Routt Apartments, which are small apartments, complete with a kitchen for four students in the middle of campus. Anyone can apply to live in them, though the apartments almost always go to seniors. Thus, there is no real need or desire for off-campus housing.

Off-campus housing can be inconvenient and requires having a car or some method of reliable transportation. Because of Claremont’s residential nature, off-campus housing tends toward groups of students renting a house or a room within a house, rather than single apartments. Studios are pretty much non-existent, and finding an individual apartment that is both affordable and near campus is a very difficult task that most students would rather not have to take on. Living off campus is unconventional in Claremont because it is costly and inconvenient, in addition to the fact that most students prefer to be heavily active in school, which requires being on campus for a large proportion of the time.

Okay Solution

Campus is the center of both academic and social life, so most people prefer to live on campus. The costs can be lower than living in the dorms and much of the available off-campus housing is generally quite well kept. There are rarely complaints about landlords or safety issues.

Basically Non-Existent

Some girls live at Pomona, and there is one house off campus that holds 10 girls, but for the most part everyone lives on campus.

Mostly Residential College

Scripps is mostly a residential college, so the great majority of students live on campus all 4 years. Scripps offers some off campus options, such as houses and apartments, that are close to campus and cost the same as living on campus (minus the cost of a meal plan), and are generally high quality. There aren't as many student-oriented housing options, however, because it is a residential college. The housing on campus is rated 4th in the nation, though.
