Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Scripps is definitely a very unique place that is not for everyone. Luckily, it is the perfect place for some. Academics are a first and foremost concern in looking at colleges, and I feel that this is also the leading concern of Scripps and its student body. Classes and faculty provide an intimate setting for in-depth learning and the personal pursuit of knowledge. The emphasis on learning, the openness to exploration, and the acceptance of what is different and exceptional are all things that students love about the school, and things that contribute to positive overall growth and development, as well as self realization. The physical comforts and beauty of the college are nothing compared to the mental challenges and the amazing student body. From classes to activities, students are taught to work beyond the bare necessity and think beyond the mere possibilities. The atmosphere here has a sense of healthy competition that encourages students to feed off each other and mature together.

Stress is a constant here, but over time, it becomes a motivational factor that does not allow you to give up on yourself. Overtime, students learn perseverance and determination. Success can only come from hard work and passion for what you are doing.

Scripps and the 5 C's Are Amazing

Scripps is amazing and how all the Claremont Colleges make a cohesive environment is nice. The social life and party scene is great and safe. It's also unique and really awesome that we can take classes at any of the colleges, live at the other schools if we do a 5C exchange and, and eat and hang out anywhere at the other schools. You get the atmoshpere of a big school with the luxuries and academics of a small school. The campuses are beautiful and Scripps campus is by far the best campus with great dorms and awesome facilities. I would choose it all over because the financial aid is good, so are academics, and the space and atmoshpere is amazing. It's not a super easy academically but it is a good challenge that will help you grow.

Scripps Is Amazing

I have to admit I never saw myself at Scripps, never thought I wanted to go here, and ultimately made my decision based on few other realistic options. I mainly had this mentality because of the idea of going to a women's college, which wasn't what I had in mind. That being said, as a sophomore at Scripps, I love it here. It is a beautiful atmosphere, amazing weather (for the most part...it DOES rain and DOES get cold in SoCal...) super friendly people, great food (we still complain about it sometimes, but in reality there are tons of great options) AMAZING faculty, gorgeous dorms and campus, and just a really really positive environment. I feel supported by staff while still feeling like I have enough freedom. Especially now that I have had more choice in my classes I have really been passionate about the courses I have taken and have learned so much over the past couple of years. It is really difficult to get an A in most classes at Scripps but I feel like it is a reflection of the high expectations professors have and I don't feel like it is unfair. It is really easy to take classes off campus (so far I have only had 1 - 2 classes on Scripps per semester, mostly because of my major) and ironically I have found the grading at schools like Pomona to be a little more lenient. This of course varies for individuals, but keep in mind if you choose to go to Scripps you are really choosing the 5C's, which for me has been great. The consortium is definitely one of my favorite aspects of being here.

This being said, it hasn't always been a smooth ride. As a first year you should be ready to feel overwhelmed, sad, homesick, overworked, etc. There were times when I really just wanted to be home. However, I feel like this is a fairly typical part of entering college and will pass. For me, the first year was a little bumpy (had lots of great parts too) and I have just become happier and more comfortable as time has passed. Give it time. Also - it isn't a piece of cake to meet boys. You will have to try harder than other people might at other schools. I have even encountered some animosity from girls from the other schools. However, I have managed to make a lot of guy friends through activities and through classes outside of Scripps. There was definitely a time where I felt like I didn't know any boys, but like I said before it just takes time and a little effort. Overall, I highly recommend Scripps to those currently in the college search. Give it a chance and you might be surprised!

Despite having the devil incarnate...

Despite having the devil incarnate as a roommate my first semester and having a less than positive interaction with the Dean of Students, I adore Scripps and I absolutely know that I made the right decision in my college search. I value the small size of the Scripps community, the accommodating faculty and staff, and the immaculate landscaping and architecture. I appreciate that people know me by name and not by social security number. I love the inherent freedom of an all-women’s college. I realize that living in close quarters with 750 women isn’t for everyone, but as I’ve come to realize in the past year, it works for me, and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else.
