Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Transportation is a common source of frustration for some students at Scripps. Claremont and the colleges are small, so there are very few nearby places to go for food or fun. Without a car, getting off campus once in a while becomes quite a problem, and private transportation is costly. This is especially true for traveling long distances, such as trips to the airport at the end of semesters and for holidays when paying for transportation becomes a must. Public transportation in Claremont is not very reliable and is very time consuming. Buses are known to be late or to not show up at all. The most popular form of transportation for going to L.A. or further cities is the Metrolink, which is affordable and dependable. Students without vehicles usually end up staying close to campus and prefer using bicycles or skates over the bus.

In general, most students do not mind staying on campus most of the time and know someone they can carpool with when needed. Over four years, though, this can become wearisome. However, improvements are steadily being made to enable students easier access to borrowing vehicles. Pomona College added a selection of Zipcars, which Scripps students may register to drive in addition to the existing vans. The driver must be licensed and registered with the school. A growing number of students opt to bring a vehicle to campus every year making transportation an increasingly less of a concern.

Everything Is on-Campus

There are so many activities on the 5Cs and the nearby Village (downtown Claremont) that there is no need to travel outside of it. If you do need to drive somewhere, there is a Claremont taxi service that will drive you within Claremont (they will even bring you to the nearest mall which is in the next town over) for only 2 dollars! If you wish to go farther than that, there are multiple zipcar stations located throughout the 5 Cs. Lastly, on the other side of Pomona, there is a train station for the MetroLink, which brings you into Union Station in downtown LA!

Transportation Not Needed - Everything on Campus!

Because Scripps is a residential college, transportation is not necessary. Parties, dorms, dining halls, classes, libraries, etc. are all located on campus within walking distance from each other. Local restaurants, movie theater, cafes, banks, and grocery stores also located within walking or biking distance from campus. A bike is handy, though.

Transportation a Breeze

Between cheap taxis, buses, the nearby train station (just at the edge of campus), Scripps vans, zip cars, and the village within walking distance, transportation is so easy here.
