Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Seattle University is not known for athletics, but that does not mean its students are a bunch of lazy homebodies. Intramural sports, while not widespread on campus, are a very popular form of both entertainment and physical exercise. There are leagues for both men and women, as well as coed options, and players can get quite competitive, but overall they tend to take things relatively easily. And the variety of sports that are offered is itself large, with students getting the chance to try everything from softball to outdoor volleyball to three-on-three basketball, though what is being offered can change from quarter to quarter. Plus, the Connolly Center has many options for those interested in sport and exercise, and it is always busy. It can be a pain to actually find an open machine in the evenings, but you shouldn’t let that keep you from heading down there for an hour or two.

Varsity sports are another matter. It was only very recently that Seattle University returned to Division I status, and the school is still trying to put together teams for some sports (baseball will not be active until the 2009-2010 year). And while the men’s basketball team did catch attention on campus and in the local media, there still isn’t a very strong following on campus. School spirit in general is lacking, and despite attempts to increase it through student organizations and promotion of athletic events, attention is still only growing. The athletes themselves are helping to raise awareness, too, and take their sports very seriously. This will probably change as Division I becomes more entrenched in the school and the teams start to develop their own reputation on campus and in the local community, but until then be ready for a relative lack of knowledge about school sports among many fellow students.

Second Year D1

Although this school has a pretty good athletic program, it is still adjusting to our move up to division 1. Many of the school's resources have been utilized in other areas, such as the ROTC program, in the years that we were not division 1, but now more resources are being concentrated in the athletic program, mainly basketball. Our head coach is Cameron Dollar, and our team plays home games in Key Arena, previous home of the Seattle Supersonics. The only downside is that we do not have a football team currently.

Athletics Popularity Growing

Seattle University recently made the move back to D-1 athletics and this has proved a mixed bag of success. Some of the smaller programs have demonstrated results; however, basketball has mostly floundered during the season. Athletes are given certain special treatment and prestige and sometimes seem resented by some of the students on this more academically progressive school.

School Spirit

School Spirit is definitely an aspect SU students and staff need to work on. The athletic programs have a small, faithful following, but the majority of the time, the crowds are made up of as many parents as there are students. The school is working on kick-starting school spirit with the recent addition of Spirit Week and the improvements to the varsity, club, and intramural sports, which are trying to survive on campus.

Getting Tickets

SU campus cards get students in home games free of charge. For everyone else, tickets are sold at the door; there isn’t usually a problem getting in.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The Arboretum, Alki Beach, Madrona Park, Volunteer Park

Did You Know?

In their first season back in Division I, the Redhawks Men’s Basketball team won 21 out of their 29 games.

More than 1,200 SU students participate, to some degree, in intramural sports; out of 7,560, that’s around 16 percent of the full population!
