- University security policies include a "blue light" security phone system that automatically connect callers to Campus Public Safety, and a "wireless" emergency alert system that includes messages about possible security issues via text messages, emails, and more.
- Seattle's own former Police Chief, Gil Kerlikowske, has been selected to head the Office of National Drug Control Policy by President Barack Obama.
- Despite a statistical drop in overall crime rates, Seattle has recently seen a rise in gang violence, including juvenile gang activity, that has been difficult to combat.
- Capitol Hill in particular has seen a recent spike in anti-gay hate crimes, including a threat to spike drinks at 11 gay bars with Ricin soon after the start of 2009; no arrests have yet been made in the case.
