It’s rather unfortunate, but for those under the age of 21 there just aren’t that many optionswhen you want to go out at night in Seattle in general, and in the area around Seattle University especially. There is the Vera Project if you’re in the mood to walk, and some clubs do have late-night 18-and-up events (such as Neighbours) and all-ages shows (like the Showbox), but they are few and far between, and there does not seem to be any major movement at this time to develop new facilities. Many students instead go to one of the many coffee shops located in the blocks around campus, from Stumptown to Caffé Vita, or to a late night showing at a theater like the Egyptian. Options do exist, but they are largely outside of the bar/club scene. On campus and house parties tend to be few, and those that do occur are relatively low key. The school has cracked down on house parties in the recent past, and RAs won’t let it slide if a dorm room gathering gets too loud. That’s not to say they do not happen at all, but they are less common than at other schools.

For those over 21, however, the social scene is far more vibrant. Capitol Hill may not be the true center of nightlife here in Seattle, but it could very well be close, as there are a number of options within a very short walk of the school itself. And if you were to head up to the Pike/Pine block or go down along Broadway, you would find a number of bars and clubs that cater to lovers of hip-hop and hard rock, to a primarily gay clientele or a primarily straight one, and to people looking to spend different amounts of cash on their night out. It depends on your taste, but you’re sure to find a place you and your friends will love to visit just to have a pint or share a few shots.

Parties?

Partying at SU is not very common. It is more typical for a student not to drink than to drink here on weekends, which is different than most college campus'. But once you find the party niche you will start to figue out where most parties are. The off campus parties are very small house parties and get broken up early. You are likely to get written up by P-Safe for drinking in your room.

Fall Quarter

Many students at SU go to frat or house partys in the U- district, a fifteen minute busride away. there are a few house partys around and a very popular gay club, Neighbors, a few blocks from campus.

Not Much to Do If You're Under 21

Seattle is known to be a great city if you're over 21, however for those of us who are under 21, there isn't much to do without things getting repetitive. People go to parties but they're not what most would picture when they imagine the typical college party. Parties are usually a bunch of hipsters having sketchy off-campus parties.

I usually end up walking downtown to see a movie with friends, eating at one of Seattle's many great restaurants, or just going on walks and exploring the city.

Club Crawler

The clubs are plentiful in Seattle. There is something for everyone and their mother (really, so watch out where you go). Pioneer Square is one of the most popular areas for clubbing and houses some of the best times to be had at bars and clubs. For a single cover charge, you can get you into tons of hotspots, receive drink specials, and party the night away on weekends. At most places, the nights end around 2 a.m., and after that, it’s every man for himself in terms of entertainment. Check out www.pioneersquare.org/restaurants.html

Bar Prowler

There are bars everywhere on Capitol Hill, for every mood and occasion. Single upperclassmen love to go out and potentially meet someone new; once you hit 21, it is all about trying new bars, because you’ll never run out of places to check out. These are a few names often heard on campus.

There are a few annual bashes put on by clubs like the Barrio Fiesta, and ASSU, including Fall Ball, Shaft, and the cruises. The dances are often held off campus at sweet venues downtown and the club cultural events, which are always popular, are held in the Campion Ballroom.

Neighbours is a popular gay bar where everyone can go to have fun, regardless of sexual preference. There are themes every night and special events every week. It is just down the street from campus, which makes it an obvious draw. It is also a place for students unfamiliar with the flavor of Broadway to get thrown right in the mix. Go Friday nights when you are feeling particularly adventurous for a fun night.

Tiki Bob’s Cantina

Tiki Bob’s is the place to go if you want a good time for dancing and to meet someone new. This club is the perfect place to let go of the stresses of the week and just kick back and have unadulterated fun! Girls and guys alike pack the place on Thursday and Friday nights. Don’t miss theme nights and nightly drink specials.

Last Supper Club

Another of the clubs nestled into Pioneer Square, Last Supper starts off rather innocently as a good restaurant in the early evening. However, after 10 p.m., the laid-back restaurant metamorphoses into a classy, high-energy dance club. Playing mainly techno, industrial, and electronica, the special guest DJs are always hot.

The Baltic Room

This is one of those rare places where it is appropriate to dress up and folks actually do. The atmosphere is luxurious, sexy, and fun. The music spans alternative rock, jazz, hip hop, rap, techno/industrial, and electronica. Touted for its exotic themed nights and outstanding DJs, it is the place to go for a special occasion.

Fenix Underground

An earthquake caused the Fenix to remodel and subsequently become the largest club in Pioneer Square. With five bars, a stage with a balcony upstairs, and two gigantic dance floors downstairs, there is room for a massive amount of fun here. It’s open after hours for tons of dancing and great live acts. The mix of people—from hipsters to Goths—is another example of why Seattle has such an outstanding atmosphere.

The Satellite Lounge

This bar pretends to be nothing other than what it is: a bar. It is a great place for inexpensive drinks and hanging out with your friends. The mix of people changes every night, but it is near campus, and it’s the place to go for true Capitol Hill ambience and company. Weekends and late nights are the most popular time to haunt the Satellite lounge.

The Garage

The Garage is a popular place to go, as it is a block off campus and has pool tables, bowling, good food, and a great atmosphere. The crowd is young and trendy. It is the place for everything—food, drinks, and entertainment. SU students flock here any night of the week.

Charlie’s on Broadway

The old-fashioned environment of Charlie’s makes it yet another colorful piece of Broadway. The food is hearty, and the drink specials are great. Charlie’s is a draw for the college crowd for a group-outing atmosphere, late hours, and strong drinks. Any given day is a good day to go.

Elysian Brewing Company

Good food and beers to match is the draw for this large establishment. One of the best brewpubs on Capitol Hill, it has a bar half a block long and floor to ceiling windows. It is definitely a great open place to go and savor what you order. Plan on dinner and drinks when you head here.

Coffee shops are the places to go and hang out if you aren’t 21. Bauhaus and Café Vita are two of the coolest and closest spots where SU undergrads like to hang out until the wee hours of the morning. A few of the always all-ages venues around include the Paradox Theater, the Old Fire House in Redmond, Ground Zero, and the Moore Theater.
