Seattle University: Local Atmosphere

If you love the city life, then Seattle is just the perfect place. Due to weather conditions, of course, everyone thinks that it rains all the time when it's not that big of a deal. So even if you can't deal with a little bit of rain during an off season, this place just isn't for you. Now, if you are a suburban to city person, Seattle University is a great place to be at.

Raincoats

The guys and girls are pretty similar across the board - hip, in style, but being Seattle, we have to cover up to avoid the rain. Rainboots are a hot fashion item up here.

Accepting

While the ethnic diversity is not extremely large, the University as a whole is very focused on acceptance and knowledge about things different from one's own, including race, ethnicity, social class, education, age, gender, sexual preference, religious affiliation, political choices, and any other interest.

Campus Police Do Their Best

They can come down a little hard on dorm parties but do a pretty good job at keeping the campus safe after dark even though some of the surrounding neighborhoods aren't the best.

Some people...

Okay I've read a couple reviews on here that are completely ridiculous and not accurate in the slightest. Yes, people were put into triples and the year started off with 4 people in the lounges, but almost ALL of the lounges are clear now in Campion; they were actually cleared out in mid-October. Second, people are actually choosing to stay in the triples because they became such good friends with their roommates.

Third, the food here is AMAZING. Almost every single station is made fresh for you. "Lukewarm cafeteria food" is the furthest thing from accurate. Go to UW; there you can eat some lukewarm cafeteria food.

Fourth, whoever complains about the weather is an idiot. You know its Seattle, you know its rainy and cloudy here alot, yet you still chose to go here and now won't shut up about it. ITS NOT GONNA CHANGE. So stop whining please.

Fifth, there are definitely parties here if you want them. UW is also a 5 minute bus ride away if you want the Greek parties too...

RA's are not that strict on my floor, and we have had a drink or two in our rooms before. Its a misconception if you think there is absolutely no drinking in SU's dorms. There's also ample weed (both regular and baked products) if you just know the right people.

I got an on-campus job during the summer and its worked out just fine. Its non work-study, so don't think its impossible to get a non work-study on-campus job here. You just have to utilize the resources around you.

Academics are excellent and you will always be pushed here. I've only had one bad professor so far.

Only negative thing here is the lack of school spirit. People generally don't care about how well our sports teams do; we mostly get excited when we get to play bigger teams, like UW or OSU.

I guess I just get upset when people complain about things that aren't true here at SU. If you want a close-knit commmunity, friends for life, awesome food, challenging/eye-opening classes, and a vibrant area to live in, then SU is for you.

Tons of Places to Check Out

There are definitely a lot of options here. SU is located on Capitol Hill which means its about a twenty minute walk to Pike Place Market, and a short bus ride downtown. Both Pikes and downtown have a lot to offer and if you just walk down Broadway you're bound to find some unique place to eat at. I haven't run into too many fast food places, but there's a lot of different options from Vietnamese, Thai, Ethiopian, Mediterranean, Mexican, Japanese, Italian and of course some great pizza places. There's also a Panera's Bread opening on Broadway as well as a Subway and Starbucks right next to campus. If you're in the mood for something sweet, it's a real short walk to Cupcake Royale on Pike St where I've never been disappointed with my choice.

Great Technology

There are several computer ranging in size, from the little cafe one to the larger ones in the engineering building and the business school. The best one yet is in the new library that was finished in the summer of 2010; the computers are new, and have huge screens! There is wifi in all dorms and around campus. Definitely a lack of macs, though; it's all PC as far as i can tell. Labs do tend to get crowded around finals when people are madly working on papers

SU Ladies: Go Elsewhere

Finding a guy on campus is quite the tall order. You have a better chance branching out into the city or the University of Washington than finding one on campus. And if you do...he's probably gay.

CPS Is Always There

Campus Public Safety is very vigilant...rather too vigilant, in fact. The slightest misstep and you could find yourself KICKED OUT. The first time you pretty much are always guaranteed a harsh reprimand, however, nothing too serious. Probation is widely used

SU Is International

Seattle University emphasizes studying abroad with plenty of small programs that go to countries all over the world. This summer I am going to India to study mass communication and media. There are also programs that go to Ghana, China, Ireland, London, Paris, Mexico, and more. A lot of majors even require a study abroad segment.

A Home Away from Home

Even commuter students can feel at home on the Seattle University campus thanks to the commuter lounges. There are six across our small campus, and each one is targeted to a specific group of commuters, like freshmen, engineering students, and others. Wifi is available all across campus, and there are printing and other computer use opportunities in nearly every building on campus. There are quite a few commuters at our school, and they all seem to enjoy campus activities.

School Is Old, but Improving

The campus sometimes looks old, some of the buildings are old, but most things are being remodeled or built. We are getting a new library, and new dorms. Most of the classrooms are updated and have new technology. The athletic center is old but there are plans in place to build a new add on.

Lots of Places, but It May Be a Walk

Seattle University is located a few blocks from downtown so there is no shortage of food options when it comes to eating out. Some places close to camus that you must check out include PoDog Hot Dogs, Yoshinos, Dicks Hamburgers, and Sela Creps. There is no shortage of coffe shops, starbucks included but you must check out, Cafe Vita, Stumptown, and Victrola.

Your Not Just a Number

Seattle University is not only in a great location, but the school is small enough that you are never just a number in class. Class sizes are small and professors always know who you are and are available to help in their office hours or over email. Resources are always available if you are struggeling and the classes are always worth your time.

Health & Safety at Seattle University

Seattle University failed to...

Seattle University failed to mention a couple relevant safety issues everyone should know before applying. Behind the dorm Campion, the most popular Seattle U dorm, there is a crack house. On the 500 block of which Campion is situated, there have been, within 2007 and 2008, seven narcotics calls, daily detox calls, 10 assault calls, 36 disturbance calls, and 24 medical aid responses, totaling about 200 police calls. Students have been robbed and beaten up around campus weekly. Honestly, safety at this campus is just some thin facade of comfort. Yeah, public safety may make you feel safe, but they aren't going to be there when something actually happens.

There aren't parties on campus...

There aren't parties on campus because on campus is all dorms. Some kids drink in their dorms, but it's not permitted by the school rules. The bar and club scene off campus is awesome, though, but only for 21+. There's a great nightlife on Capitol Hill for all kinds of people. It's super gay friendly. One of the gay dance clubs allows underage kids into their club after last call at 2 a.m. to dance. Great bars around include the Cha Cha, Havana, and the Comet. There are great venues around Capitol Hill including Neumos and Chop Suey.

Our school is small, but there are...

Our school is small, but there are usually about 2-3 parties every weekend that much of the party crowd ends up revolving through. They can be fun but get cramped around 11-12ish and then it just gets sloppy. Seattle does not sell alcohol after 2 a.m., so unless you are stocked up, the party dissolves around then anyway. A lot of people drink with larger groups of friends (5-12 people) in their homes before going out, and that is usually the most fun. Nightlife 21+ is pretty diverse from breweries to pubs to small bars and taverns. These places are super close to campus, so it's easy to just grab a drink or stay out all night and walk the block back to wherever you live.

Seattle University is the best...

Seattle University is the best place ever. I am very, very happy with my choice to come here. Seattle is a wonderful city to be a college student in, and the actual University has a very unique and wonderful balance between being small enough to accommodate the needs of students and big enough to accommodate their interests.

No, I don’t wish I were somewhere else. I’m afraid of checking out grad schools now, because I want any school to live up to SU! It will be hard to find a school as great as this one.
