Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you are a freshman, and live on campus, you will be living in Boland or Aquinas Hall—drop down on your knees and beg for Boland. Boland Hall houses more than 1,000 freshmen, and half of them are of the opposite sex. This will be the first time that most of the students will be living on their own, which will form special bonds within the confines of the dormitory. Aquinas is a dungeon: dark, damp, and confusing to find your way around. As you progress through the University, you have other choices of residency—Xavier being the biggest, and most sought after, dorm. It is the most appealing because it is the newest dorm with the biggest rooms, and it is located at the center of campus. Xavier is the choice of most of the athletes, who get first crack at picking their residency, which speaks volumes to its popularity. Cabrini is where many Greeks live, Neumann is a middle-of-the-line dormitory, and then there is Serra, which is the Aquinas equivalent of upperclassmen’s dormitories.

If you would prefer to feel like you are living off campus, but still need financial aid to pay for housing, Ora Manor and Turrell Manor are calling your name. Ora Manor sits about half a mile from campus, but has all the great feelings of a real apartment, down to paying for utilities. Turrell Manor is similar, except is directly across the street from campus and demands community service from all its residents. A word of warning if you choose to live in Ora or Turrell Manor: don’t think that because you live there that you will get a parking pass for campus; the administration doesn’t consider you a commuter.

Noise Vs. Peace

The cost for living on campus is ridiculously high, but the benefit of being so close to your classes is great. If you are a freshman Boland and Aquinas would be where you stay and on Thursday nights is where it gets loud. Other Halls are for upperclassmen and it is much better than the freshmen dorms. We have a lot of floor interactions and meetings, to better get to know your neighbors and there are places where you can hang out late.

Many Students Commute -- and It Is No Mystery as to Why.

The freshman dorms are horrible -- but that's to be expected. Once you get through your freshman year, dorms do improve slightly, but there is still not a large variety of where you can live. Upperclassmen have 3 buildings to choose from on campus, and 2 apartments (that are far enough that require you to have a car) off campus.
