Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Seton Hall University, one of the most diverse campuses in the country, caters to people of all cultures, so nobody will feel marginalized. Due to the population of every nationality, Seton Hall is a friendly place with little bigotry or racism. When coming to Seton Hall, many people are not used to being exposed to so many different races, or even minorities, so freshman orientation is partly comprised of sensitivity training programs.

Part of the Seton Hall experience is the exposure to people of different cultures and backgrounds. There are many different programs on campus that cater to different cultures, and incorporate them into the thread of the University. But diversity is more than just a black and white thing; it is the acceptance and understanding of different racial, religious, and sexual cultures. Here at Seton Hall, we have a myriad of races, many different faiths, and different sexual orientations, which is why Seton Hall scores well on diversity. Unfortunately, although SHU is diverse, the different cultures do not often intermingle. This is an issue that the administration is addressing, though.

Mixed Population

Seton Hall has a mixed population of students but races seem to stick together. Often in classes there is a majority of white students and a few other races mixed in. In most cases there are not a lot of racial problems and people seem to get along.

Diversity

Seton Hall University is a very diverse campus. (However there are definitely more females than males on campus). There are almost 100 clubs from the Salvic club to Adelante (a club for Latino-Americans). I myself am part of a multi-cultural sorority. Seton Hall is not only diverse culturally but diverse in the activites it offers-from the Drama club to service based clubs on campus.

Facts

Gay Pride

Given Seton Hall’s Catholic nature, the gay community on campus is not often mentioned. But the campus does fight strongly against discrimination, and is open to the current clubs and organizations on campus.

Political Activity

Political activity is minimal on campus, with the College Democrats and College Republicans really only prevalent during the election years. The Student Government Association recognizes several other parties, including the Young Democratic Socialists, but they are rather low key.

Economic Status

Seton Hall has students from diverse economic backgrounds, but there is a predominant amount of wealthy students here.

Most Common Religions

The dominant religion at Seton Hall is Roman Catholic. Still, the school is open to all types of religion, and even sponsors a week devoted to other cultures and religions during the fall semester.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Minority clubs seem to make up the majority of active clubs on campus. Some of the clubs include the African Student Association, Black Student Union, Chinese Student Association, and Martin Luther King Student Association. Access to several of these clubs is reserved exclusively to minorities.

Did You Know?
  • Seton Hall holds a diversity training course for each freshman class, which is repeated with any hate crime offenses.
  • Seton Hall hosts an entire week of cultural dances and celebrations in the fall semester sponsored by many of the multicultural organizations on campus.
