Best Time to Look for a Place

Students should look for apartments at the beginning of spring semester, probably as soon as January or February. By the time the summer rolls around, most of the apartments around campus are already secured for the next academic year.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Living off campus can save you money, and you are no longer under the long arm of Residence Life. Ever since the Boland Hall Fire a few years ago, the dorms are strict with guest policies and appliances. If you live in Boland, you are not supposed to be in another building past two in the morning. You cannot have a candle, extension cord, empty liquor bottle (even if it is decorated), or a toaster. You also have to walk in past a guard if you come in after hours. If you are in your rooms after hours, do not consider making any noise since the resident assistants roaming the floors will check your room out.

I personally lived in Boland and Xavier Halls, then moved to an off-campus house for a year, and now I am in an apartment. I made the move so I could have a car, since at Seton Hall, unless you are a senior, you are not allowed to park on campus. Living in a house is an amazing experience, but it takes discipline. I spent many hours in the library to keep my grades up. Housing is relatively easy to find in South Orange if you look early in the spring. Once May hits, if you have not found anywhere to live, you are pretty much stuck living in a dorm, which is not altogether awful, but good luck finding some privacy.

Housing

On campus has its ups and downs. Fire drills are the worst especially at late hours. However living on-campus is very convenient. Both on-campus and off-campus living is expensive.

On-Campus Housing

I currently live on campus during my freshman year. I enjoy the dorm because it is safe and I have many friends that live in the same building. I have not explored the options of living off-campus.

Harder to Find Than It Should Be

I had a difficult time trying to find an apartment that was affordable and close to campus. You don't want to be to far from campus because the area is not the safest to be walking alone in if your schedule requires you to walk in evening or night. You are able to talk with Parking Authorities and buy parking permits but these can also be expensive.
