Seriously, it's in a major city with a world-class restaurant scene. There are so many fantastic places to eat in Chicago, you can't go wrong. Unfortunately the dining options within walking distance of the campus itself are pretty limited, but get on the CTA. Chinatown is very close, Taylor Street is too.

Honestly, I am an adult student and don't live on campus. It's college, so I assume people on campus experiment a bit but I don't have any firsthand knowledge of it.

I have not been going to school here very long, but I have to say the academic part of school is great. The teachers and courses are so interesting. The only drawbacks I have experienced so far are on the office side of things. There have been some organizational issues that have been pretty impactful. Also, they really want more adult non-traditional students but don't seem to understand that it's hard to recruit non-traditional students when the offices those students may need to visit or contact are only open weekdays from 9-4.

Good Package – Its not hard to get in and they can get good money for you, but I don't know what they spend it on because there is no campus and it is all paperbacks you can get at amazon.

Your Choice of Getto – There are some liveable places but you get jocky types in bridgeport and criminals in pilsen and gunfire all night around campus.

Like-Minded but Open-Minded – Shimer College is a haven for liberal intellectual bookworms. Most people are impressively intelligent and fun to philosophize with. While most people fall on the left side of the political spectrum, there are also conservative and religious students who are fully accepted by the left-leaning students. This college is a sanctuary for socialists, communists, anarchists, atheists, agnostics, hippies, and stoners. But no one is ostracized.

More Academic Than Athletic – Shimer College students are highly intellectual and philosophical. We enjoy talking about books, current events, and philosophy. There is the occasional frisbee throwing, and if someone is interested in athletic involvement they could probably find someone to join them. However, most athleticly inclined students go to the gym on campus.

Chicago School Means Endless Activities – Since Shimer College is in Chicago and steps away from public transportation, if there's an activity you're interested in pursuing chances are you can find it and do it.

Snow Can Slow the Streets – at times snow can make the city difficult to nagivate through, however the school is not too far away, and if planned correctly one can walk through most weather

Take the CTA – The chicago transit authrity is by far the best option, the school provids you with a discounted card and so you have unlimited bus and train rides in chicago.

Drugs Are Prevalent but Not Everywhere – Many students partake in drugs and alcohol, however about 1/4 of the population does not. There is little peer pressure as everyone is very respectful of others.

An Amazing College – Shimer was an amazing experience. Since I graduated, I have only becom more convinced of how wonderful a place it is. I have never met anyone who thinks nearly as highly of their college or university experience as everyone who attended Shimer feels about theirs. I only wish the rest of my education--indeed, he rest of my life--was like attending Shimer College.

Guys & Girls:
Smart, Fun, Interesting – If you hated the social scene in high school, you will love Shimer. The students (and faculty) are all "real"--no BS, no bullying, no contempt or denigrating others. There is no exclusion allowed, which is why Shimer does not allow fraternities or sororities, and never has. Everyone is treated with respect and appreciated, and kids who were demeaned and abused by others in high school often find themselves very popular at Shimer. Race, gender, sexual orientation, physical attractiveness--they matter far less at Shimer than any other college or university I have ever heard of. Most students tend to be really smart, really interesting, and really fun. Noby dresses to impress others, and everyone is treated equally. Oddly enough, Shimer students tend to be pretty attractive--but maybe that's because they are comfortable with who they are and are not trying to impress others.

It Has Everythinhg – If you are interested in it, you can find it. Because of the cooperative agreements between Shimer and the other colleges on the campus, almost anything is available Student life has many options, the student body is small but diverse, and cultural and social opportunities are abundant.

Shimer provides an academic experience unlike any other college I have heard of. No class has more than 12 students. All classes use original sources; there are NO textbooks, no rehashed BS that you get at typical schools. All classes are discussion-based; you discuss the text on an equal footing with your professor. This is as different from high school as anything you will ever see. And it works; you will be amazed at the improvement in your writing, speaking, and thinking skills.

Frats and Sororities Available Through Vandercook or IIT – Shimer does not have Greek fraternities or sororities, but the local schools, VanderCook and IIT, have them.

Health & Safety:
Quite Safe – Shimer is on IIT's campus, and their campus security is quite efficient. Records of incidents are made public, and generally, the campus is quite safe and controlled. As with any place, the possibilities of danger rises at night, but I've personally never felt any concern walking around because the campus is rather well-lit. You can often see the campus security making their rounds, but they're never oppressive unless you give them reason to be.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
