College Prowler Take
Boston is one of the most expensive housing markets in the nation, but if you can afford it, off-campus housing may be the right choice. It is fairly easy to find housing off campus on your own, but many students look to realtors for assistance. The bulletin boards on the main campus often have posting about people looking to rent an apartment or sublet their apartment. Word of mouth and online boards like Craigslist are great for finding a roommate or even a room. Living on a student budget, many students end up moving far from campus in order to afford their apartment. Unfortunately, the Fenway area that Simmons is in is one of the most expensive and coveted neighborhoods for real estate, so many students look at housing near other colleges for more reasonable rates. These areas also have the most competition for apartments. Students can find themselves living as far out as Allston or Somerville, which may require an extra bus stop or a line change on the T. Most students end up looking at areas like Mission Hill, Beacon Hill, or Jamaica Plain. Sublets are popular for the summer, but be aware of shady roommates and devious landlords—it is very easy for students to fall into tricky situations.

Off-campus housing is convenient, but extremely expensive. Watch out for slum lords who prey on college students who need cheap housing. |

You can find housing very close to the main campus, so it is really convenient. But it’s inconvenient in the sense that if you want to be involved in various organizations, most meetings take place on the Residence Campus. Also, I find it much less stressful to live on campus during my undergraduate years, because people don’t realize how much more responsibility it is to live in an apartment. |

It can be convenient. I haven’t lived off campus, but if you live on campus, it’s a seven-minute walk to the academic classes, and if you’re going to be at the Main Campus Building really late, it might not be safe to go back to your apartment alone that late. Also, think of the commute in the morning waiting for the T. I’m not going to lose 30 minutes of sleep to live off campus. |

Housing is very expensive and not convenient. I don’t believe it’s worth it, but it differs from person to person. If you like a roommate and don’t enjoy being on campus, then it may work out for you. |

Housing off campus is convenient...
Housing off campus is convenient but expensive. The Fenway area is so densely populated that the price of rent just keeps rising. |
