Boston is one of the most expensive housing markets in the nation, but if you can afford it, off-campus housing may be the right choice. It is fairly easy to find housing off campus on your own, but many students look to realtors for assistance. The bulletin boards on the main campus often have posting about people looking to rent an apartment or sublet their apartment. Word of mouth and online boards like Craigslist are great for finding a roommate or even a room.

Living on a student budget, many students end up moving far from campus in order to afford their apartment. Unfortunately, the Fenway area that Simmons is in is one of the most expensive and coveted neighborhoods for real estate, so many students look at housing near other colleges for more reasonable rates. These areas also have the most competition for apartments. Students can find themselves living as far out as Allston or Somerville, which may require an extra bus stop or a line change on the T. Most students end up looking at areas like Mission Hill, Beacon Hill, or Jamaica Plain. Sublets are popular for the summer, but be aware of shady roommates and devious landlords—it is very easy for students to fall into tricky situations.
