Quick StatsBest Ways to Get Around TownHow to Get to the Airport
- A cab ride to the airport costs $20 to $30. All fares leaving Logan are charged a $1.50 airport fee.
- The MBTA subway and buses are the easiest means of transportation to Logan. A free shuttle moves between the T and the airport terminals, and runs from 4 a.m. to 1 a.m. Further transportation options are the taxis, airport water shuttles which move between Rowes Wharf and Logan. City water taxis connect the airport with Boston Harbor. The harbor express connects the South Shore and Logan via Long Wharf.
College Prowler Take
Like its urban peers, Boston is equipped with bus lines and an underground subway system. The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) crisscrosses the Boston area. The subway system—the T—connects the Red, Blue, Orange, Green, and Silver lines. The colors of the system lines are identifiable by key landmarks—for example, the Green line is named for the green of Fenway Park. Much to the disadvantage of busy students, the Green line is the most unreliable of the lines, and it is also more expensive than the other lines. Subway passes are offered at a discounted rate for students at the beginning of each semester, which helps cut back on the fare. It is easy to get an understanding of the system, even for students from areas without subways of their own. Unfortunately, the subway system runs on a restricted schedule, and after 1 a.m., taxis become the only mode of transportation for students out for a late night. Simmons does provide taxi vouchers for students with disabilities or a broken leg. Above-ground bus lines fill in the gaps that the T does not service, but because Boston is a walkable city, it is sometimes faster to walk up the block than take the T or to bring a bicycle. During the Boston winters, the commute to the Academic Campus becomes generally difficult and frustrating. Do not be alarmed if you see Bostonians skiing up the street.

The T stop is really close; it’s just a pain in the winter. Sometimes it takes forever for the inbound train to get there, so if you’re in a rush, it’s worth walking the few blocks to Kenmore. |

Within a two-minute walk from both the Res Campus and the Academic Campus are two stops on the Green Line of the T. Both will take you to relatively any place in the city. The T is pretty easy to get the hang of, even to those who have never used it before. Boston is also known as a walking city, so as long as you’re willing to walk for a bit, mostly everything you need is within walking distance as well. |

The MBTA (Mass Bay Transit Authority) does a decent job of getting us around town. Most students (especially commuters) use the T system (subway) and the commuter rail. Some students also use the buses. The funny thing is that Boston is the most walkable city in the country, so it often takes you less time to walk somewhere than to wait for a T to take you there. Also, cabs are always available, even in the middle of the night. |

Transportation is very convenient. There are two T stops, one near Res Campus and one near the Main Campus Building. It scared me at first, having never lived in a city, but it’s really easy to pick up and learn quickly. |
