Simmons students have a love/hate relationship with Mother Nature. It is usually hat-and-gloves season from the end of November through March. And despite what you may hear, it is not always a blizzard in Boston—the city is privy to all four seasons. The fall in New England is legendry, and it’s a perfect “welcome back” to returning students in September. The trees glow with oranges and reds, illuminating the city in a whole new light. The long duration of snow season cuts into the mild weather of spring. The heat of summer comes quickly and can be intense. The humidity of the city causes many students without air conditioning to sweat and leave their room for ice cream. Rooftops make excellent tanning beds.
Yes, it snows in Boston and temperatures are freezing, but this can be both a positive and a negative for students. Nor’easters—as snowstorms here are called—brings enough white for snow angels and snowmen in the quad, but it also impairs the trip to class, especially for students living off campus. The city is slow to shut down under the threat of white, so do not expect too many snow days. The snowplows work through the night, clearing a way for cars to move in and out of the city. Students must fend for themselves on the sidewalk, so bring some good boots. The hike to the Main Campus Building from the Residence Campus can be as difficult as trudging up Mount Everest. Some Bostonians have adopted alternative methods, like cross-country skis for faster transportation.
