Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For the most part, Skidmore students feel apathetic about athletics. Teams make their presence visible through flyers, the school newspaper, Skidnews, and e-mail announcements about games. Skidmore athletes have a great deal of energy and spirit, but athletic spirit has yet to infect the non-athletic portion of the student body. When the college decided to cut men’s hockey out of the budget, the team and its supporters showed a large amount of dedication and spirit in their efforts to raise enough money to keep the team, and they were successful. But, as one student commented, the sports and non-sports cultures are very segregated. Many students cite sports teams as the college’s substitute for Greek life—athletes tend to eat together, party together, and live together.

The equestrian team is Skidmore’s best team. They are five-time national champions. Women’s field hockey, volleyball, and lacrosse teams are strong, as well as Skidmore’s golf team. It is often a trend for Skidmore athletes to switch over to club teams after a year or two playing varsity. Club hockey notably (there are men’s and women’s teams) receives a lot of support from fans and offers a more relaxed game. Intramurals also get a good amount of players through the seasons. There are many student athletes at Skidmore, many more than the members of varsity teams. Many students that enjoy athletics seem to prefer intramurals and club sports, this being a relief to the time-consuming, rigorous schedules of the typical varsity athlete.

Sports Are Not Essential to Skidmore's Brand

I had nothing to do with sports and went to maybe 2 games total at Skidmore. There is an interest in sports but it does not fit in with the typical Skidmore student.

Nobody Cares That Much About Sports

As a member of a sports team, I know that nobody really cares about us except for our friends. People assume that jocks are stupid and therefore don't fit into this "hipster" scene that Skidmore is so obsessed with.

Most Overlooked Teams

Cycling! Officially, Skidmore cycling is a chartered club. However, in their first season of racing, they ranked 10th of 35 in Division II of the Easter Collegiate Cycling Conference.

School Spirit

This is lacking at Skidmore for a few reasons: 1) Athletics are a very small part of Skidmore life. Art, music, and dance dominate most support from students in terms of attendance at performances. 2) Skidmore doesn’t have a football team. 3) Skidmore students seem to be more involved in individual interests and issues, rather than in the school community as a whole.
