College Prowler Take

The main computer lab on campus is located in the library, but it is generally crowded during exam and paper crunch time. There are several labs located in the academic buildings, but public use depends on class schedules and the building closes at 11 p.m. There are several small computer labs located in the dorms (Howe-Rounds and Tower), but contain only two to four computers. There are public computers located in the student center and the academic buildings, but they are not connected to printers, and are generally used for checking e-mail rather than for academic work. The majority of students bring their own computers, and although it is not necessary, it is helpful. If you have a laptop, there are jacks to connect to the Internet all over campus (in dorms, the library, and even in the dining hall), and wireless Internet is available in the student center. There are some students that find typing notes in class is easier for them. This isn’t always going to fly with professors, but most of the time, it is an option.

Computers become very hard to come by during finals week, and it seems like the students who have laptops have an advantage. There are Internet connections in every dorm room for each student, but if you have a roommate and need somewhere quiet to concentrate, there may be a problem.

Definitely bring your own computer. There are labs on campus and in the library, but during exams and midterms, the computers are hard to come by. The network works great when you live on campus because you have your own space to save work. Overall, it’s a computer-friendly campus, but I would strongly suggest bringing your own.

You should absolutely bring your own computer. Laptops are great because you can connect to wireless Internet in the library and other areas on campus. Getting a computer in the library is not an easy task.

It is sometimes hard to find a computer in a prime spot in the library, but usually if you search hard enough, you’ll eventually discover one. There are also computer labs on campus that many students don’t use (or know about). It is a good idea to have your own, though.

The computer network at Skidmore is average. My cable connection at home is noticeably faster than the connection on campus, but that is not to say that it is inadequate. My grades have never suffered from any Internet-related disasters on campus.

The computer network everyone is plugged into is having problems with worms and viruses, though. They are trying to fix that, but it has been going on since December and is still not fixed. The computer labs at night in the library are especially full during finals week—you can’t really get to one unless you are there since morning. I have my own computer and I suggest having one. It has made my life so much easier not having able to worry about if I will get a computer; all of my friends have a computer. Plus, it is awesome to play movies and music on—it takes the place of the television and stereo. It is worth the investment.
