Quick Stats

School Slang
  • Bros: Used to describe the more athletic/preppy male students at Skidmore ("The bros sit on the blue side of d-hall.")
  • CTM: "Creative Thought Matters," as in the College's slogan. This phrase is often used when someone does something...creative. Example: "Did you just blow that fly out of the room with the fan? CTM!"
  • DA’s: Short for Desperate Annie’s, a popular bar on Caroline Street
  • D-hall: Dining hall
  • DT: Downtown
  • Hipsters: Used to describe the "artsy" students at Skidmore
  • JoTo: Jonsson Tower, a residence hall
  • Libs/Lib: Library

  • SEC: Student Entertainment Company, a company that puts on the big speakers and concerts each year
  • SGA: Student Government Association
  • T ‘n’ L: Short for a bar called The Tin ‘n’ Lint, though many students only know the abbreviation
  • Townies: Residents of Saratoga (usually referred to when describing the scene at a bar/somewhere downtown)
  • Uncommon: Short for Uncommon Grounds, a local coffee spot frequented by Skidmore students
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Freshman year, you'll most likely be put into a triple. Learn to live with others!
  • Pre-orientation is awesome. You'll meet a group of people before school starts, including your pre-orientation leaders, which are older students—a nice connection to have when starting off at college.
  • Yes, it snows. Bring snow boots and/or rain boots, and of course, a winter jacket. If you have a car, bring an ice scraper and possibly a shovel—just in case.
Tips to Succeed
  • Always keep expanding your friends. It's a small school, and sometimes Skidmore can feel cliquey, so make sure you're always being friendly. The more friends you have, the more fun you'll have!
  • Always keep up with your email. It's how you'll find out about everything from canceled classes to student announcements. Also, professors expect that you answer their emails. Don't forget!
  • Figure out a place to study that isn't your room—sometimes you need a quieter space! Try different places both on and off campus.
  • Get to know your professors and take advantage of their availability.
  • Get your general requirements over with ASAP; those requirements are also a great way to figure out what you want to major in if you're unsure.
  • Make sure your schedule is something you can handle. If you're not a morning person, avoid a morning class. If you can't handle taking five classes, don't.
  • Work hard freshman year; it will get harder, and your GPA certainly counts for freshman year.

Skidmore

Skidmore is unique because it is a small liberal arts college that really focuses on the needs of the students. It is very easy to get a job because everything on campus is run by students. We do not have fraternities or soroities but that does not shield the campus from any fun. There is always something to do and there are many clubs. Our campus has events almost every night of the week for students to enjoy and participate in. Skidmore offers internships, scholarship, and opportunities for students to excell. Skidmore is definitely unique.

Realistic Dreamers

Skidmore is definitely a college for people who have big dreams, but want to actually find a job when they graduate. The faculty are frequently more than willing to assist ambitious students in finding jobs, and for the location in upstate New York there are a surprising number of cool internships to be had. People are definitely open-minded and incredibly intelligent, but there is a bit more focus on learning the rules before you start breaking them. I think it is great, I have a strong basis in English literature which allows me to deeply understand contemporary creative writing.

Facts

Traditions
  • Fun Day: Every year, on the Sunday before the last day of classes of the spring semester, there is Fun Day, a.k.a "The Best Day At Skidmore." On this day, students all migrate to the library green (by the pond). There are inflatable carnival games, hot dogs, hamburgers, cotton candy, and popcorn. The day is treated like a day-long party, so there is drinking and smoking across the green. Campus Safety is around but relaxed about it; they are mostly watching out to make sure everybody is safe. Traditionally, the "giveaway" for Fun Day includes Fun Day sunglasses that will be seen on the brim of everyone's nose in the weeks (and years) following Fun Day.
  • Graduation Recession: During this part of the ceremony, the new graduates walk through a line of professors who congratulate them on four years of hard work.
  • The Hunt: Organized by the Outing Club, "The Hunt" is an R-rated college-student version of a day-long scavenger hunt. The Hunt happens sometime in the fall semester (you know it's coming when there are signs all around campus). There is always a big party the night of The Hunt to celebrate and announce the winners.
  • Junior Ring: Every year, Junior Ring is held on the Saturday night before the last day of classes in the fall semester. It is a semi-formal dance held in the small gym of the sports center. It is hosted by the junior class and usually has a theme. There is dancing, buffet-style food (cheese squares!), and a beer garden if you're 21-and-up and get a campus event card.
  • Moorebid: Named after it was hosted in the old Moore Hall, Moorebid is Skidmore's college-wide Halloween party. Hosted on the Saturday night either directly before or after Halloween, this dance gets a little crazy with hundreds of costumed students. Skidmore students get creative with their costumes; it's always fun to see what everyone dresses up as.
  • Naked Run: This is a sub-tradition of Fun Day. It's pretty self-explanatory.
  • Showcase: At the very beginning of the year, all of the performance groups come together for a big show to present themselves to the first-year students, so the first-years can learn about different groups on campus.
  • Under the Big Top: Skidmore’s dance and musical groups perform in this show for Celebration Weekend and graduation.
  • Waffle Fest: On the night before exams begin, the dining hall serves waffles and other delicious breakfast food at 8 p.m. The meal is free for every student, and it is the most perfect study break a student could ask for. But get there early—everyone goes!
Urban Legends Wilmarth is supposedly haunted by a girl who died in a fire in the '70s. People say you can see/hear her in the dorm room in which she died.
