College Prowler Take

Unless you’re 21, Saratoga doesn’t have much of a nightlife (there’s always Denny’s, Dunkin Donuts, or the bowling alley). The college attempts to offer alternatives to drinking on the weekend such as Totally Free Movies, lectures and readings. There are dance parties at Falstaff’s, the on-campus club, and small bands also play here, in The Spa, and on The Green when it is warm. Caffé Lena is another hot spot for underage drinkers. This café often hosts Skidmore’s talent and is a favorite hangout among students looking for a bar alternative. When it is warm there are always house parties within walking distance, and when it is cold, there are often students having parties in their dorm rooms or in Scribner Village, despite increasing campus strictness. If you are over 21, the sheer volume of bars downtown offer a lot of variety and wild times. Of course, there are certain bars that feel like home to Skidmore students. The most popular bars you will find Skiddies are listed above, but for extra tips: go to Gaffenys’s in warm weather because there is an the outside patio, Peabody’s on games nights because they have 25-cent wings, and Desparate Annie’s (DA’s) or T ‘N’ L on cold nights, because the small enclosed space in both bars will keep you warm.

Aside from the deals throughout the week shown above, there are often happy hours and drink specials at bars during the week and on weekends. Just take a stroll down Caroline Street and read a few posters, as the deals vary.

You like belligerent drunks? Desperate Annie’s is the only good bar. It is like Cheers only with a great jukebox and younger kids. There are no mailmen in uniform.

Don’t worry, any school you go to will have parties—just because we don’t have frats and sororities doesn’t mean there are no parties.

Most of the bars can only be gotten into if you are 21 (assuming you like to follow the law). The ones people go to the most are probably Desperate Annie’s (DA’s), Tin ‘N’ Lint, and Gaffney’s. Though it is fun to go out, there is also a lot to do without going to bars, so don’t worry.

As an underclassman, one usually goes to friends’ dorm rooms. Those are usually fun, but can easily been broken up by Campus Security. The College has been interfering more with campus events trying to limit the alcohol used. Saratoga has a great bar scene downtown. All types of places, a little something for everyone, and it is all in a four block area.

Facts

Club Crawler

The following is the best (only) nightclubs in Saratoga. They mostly draw local Saratogians with a smattering of college students. A lot of students prefer venturing down to Albany when they really want to go dancing.

Bar Prowler

Saratoga is said to contain more bars per capita than any other city on the East Coast. During the school year Skidmore students dominate the bar scene; however, depending on which bar you visit, there are local Saratogians, young professions, and the occasional sketchy old guy. The following bars are the most popular among Skidmore students:

Organization Parties

Skidmore organizations often sponsor parties, most of which are held in Falstaff’s.

In the past, there have been an abundance of off-campus house parties every weekend during the warm months. With the introduction of Northwoods and the fact that more students are living on campus, the amount of house parties has decreased over the past few years though every now and then you will hear of something going on off-campus. Don’t expect too many parties in the frigid winter months because people tend to bank on large yards to host big parties. Come spring time, the off-campus parties will quickly increase, and you can expect to spend at least a few Friday nights fighting your way through a crowded house to try and find the bathroom, the keg, or both.
