College Prowler Take

Restaurants off campus in Saratoga are abundant. The majority are on and around Broadway. It is hard to be dissatisfied with the selection because the variety is endless. Styles include American, Irish pub, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Southern, Italian, Mexican, and French. But the favorites are obvious. In terms of a more upscale meal, Wheatfields is a popular place to get a homemade pasta dish and delicious warm bread. Another place on Broadway that offers a lighter arrangement of food like sandwiches, salads, and fish is called Scallions. There are many delis around town that are generally great spots to grab lunch without having to sit and be served. Roma’s, Putnam Market and Spring Street are only a few suggestions that never disappoint. Saratoga is also home of some of the best pies you can find—it is pretty common to order out for pizza upon returning to the dorms after a night of partying, but call before 2 a.m. If you feel like warming up to a tasty latte over some studying (let’s be honest—people watching), Uncommon Grounds is your place. They also have the best bagels in Saratoga, hands-down. Still hungry after hours? Esperanto welcomes beer-filled stomachs until about 4 a.m., and probably help a little with the morning hang over. Oh, and how can you forget good ol’ Comptons? This breakfast joint on Broadway opens at 3:30 am. Warning: the wait staff are the only sober people in this place, and even that is sometimes questionable!

As the Web site advertises, in Saratoga you can “dine like royalty.” Many of the local restaurants are hard on a college student’s budget, but generally worth spending the money on at least once in a while. And if fine dining doesn’t interest you, Wilton is home to McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Applebees, Friendly’s and Denny’s.

The Hungry Spot is a lunch spot...

The Hungry Spot is a lunch spot that is often overlooked because it is hidden in the same building as a bunch of businesses. But it’s on Broadway, so check this place out for delicious soups, wraps and coffee. They even have a lunchbox meal deal!

Esperanto’s has cheap, easy, good...

Esperanto’s has cheap, easy, good food. An okay selection is Pope’s because of its great pizza; Pickle Barrel is an okay deli/sandwich spot; Little India has great food, slow service, and is pricey. Others restaurants are all too expensive unless you have a trust fund.

The only thing to do downtown is eat, but most places are expensive (but very yummy). There is Sushi Thai, Ravenous, Esperanto’s, Spring Street Deli, and Wheatfields.

Saratoga has a ton of restaurants....

Saratoga has a ton of restaurants. A lot of them are fairly expensive because of the rich people that eat there, but there are others that are nice for students. I like Ravenous the best (serves all different kinds of crepes). Four Seasons, Sushi Thai Garden, and Wheatfields are also good for dinner.

Saratoga has everything from cheap fast food to five star dining. There is an Uno Chicago Grill, Friday’s, and a ton of chain restaurants out of town towards the mall.

Did You Know?

Esperanto was founded by a Skidmore professor who was also the inventor of the doughboy. The doughboy is a lot like a Hot Pocket—wrapped inside pizza dough you find cheese, chives, and chicken, which is a wonderful late-night treat.
