Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Skidmore is a residential campus, which means you are guaranteed housing all four years here. However, it also means that you have to get the college’s permission before moving off campus. Living off campus can be a lot of fun, but it can be tough in the winter if you don’t have a car. There are plenty of apartments in walking distance of the campus. Students also ride bikes and car pool to save money. There are plenty of houses and apartments available to students, but there are levels of leniency among landlords and differences in living situations among students. Some landlords, as sexist as it may be, will only rent to girls, for fear of their houses becoming too dirty or falling down. The houses on Woodlawn are typical “college houses.” They are usually ?lled with students, garbage, and beer cans. Not a big deal to many college students, but some prefer a place where you can take your shoes off. The options are endless when it comes to off-campus options; you just have to search a little and figure out what standards you have.

It is common for Skidmore upperclassmen to live in Scribner Village or Northwoods for a year and then off campus for senior year, though with the introduction of Northwoods the numbers of off-campus students has significantly decreased. A lot of students highly recommend moving off-campus senior year because it allows you to experience all three living situations, and all are different and fun in their own way. Some say living off campus prepares you more for graduation and the real world. You have bills to pay, chores to do, and decisions to make. Just be sure to live with people have similar habits to you or a similar lifestyle, as you could easily create conflict in situations with neat freaks and slobs attempting co-habitation. Other perks of off-campus living are that is costs less than living on campus, and you are able to stock a fridge and prepare your own food.

I Know Little

I know little to none about off campus housing because most people just live on campus all four years. Senior year there are beautiful four and three person houses on campus so I do not know why anyone would need to live off campus.

Party Houses

I'm a freshman so I don't know much about off campus housing. What I hear though, is that if you live in an off campus house that its generally expected to be a party house. Some houses have worse reputations than others, but it seems to be the general stigma with off campus living.
