College Prowler Take
The number one piece of advice for Skidmore weather: wear layers! The beginning and end of the year tend to be very pleasant (ranging from 55 to 70 degrees), but everything in between ranges from cold to colder to frigid. The buildings tend to be hot, so you’ll want to be able to remove the layers that kept you warm on the walk to class. There will be times when the weather will affect your social life. A negative 30 wind-chill factor does not exactly scream, “party-time!” This isn’t a guaranteed annual weather report, but it has happened in the past. The good news is, when weather gets really bad, classes get cancelled! The snow also enforces the rule that students can only park in certain lots and must move their cars according to the show plow schedule. This can be a pain in the butt, but if you don’t obey, your car will be towed. One of the best things about Skidmore is the covered walkway system. With the exception of the 50 uncovered feet surrounding the academic building, you can walk almost everywhere on campus and not be doused in snow or penetrated by rain. Even if it doesn’t stop the wind or the snow that is blowing in at you sideways, it does make walking to Case Center or the dining hall a lot more tolerable. Students have been known to even wear their slippers to the dining hall because it is such a short, comfortable walk from the dorms. But the snow isn’t all bad. During the winter months, there is plenty of skiing and sledding, not to mention snowball fights and snowman-making contests. Every once in a while, there will be enough snow to cancel classes, and inevitably, a seven foot snow phallus appears on the green after the first big snow.

Every year I try to wait until after Thanksgiving to bring my sweaters and winter gear, and every year I regretted it. When it gets to be about 60 in the spring, everyone puts on shorts and thinks it’s summer because we are so used to the miserable cold most of the year. |

It is cold during the winter and spring. In the fall, it starts to get cold. Dress warm and always have a jacket in case it starts to snow. The buildings are hot, but outside of them the weather is chilly; wear lots of layers. If you are from a state that’s never seen snow before—well, it sometimes gets down to negative 13 (that is really, really cold). |

It is very, very cold, grey, and snowy from October to April. A coat of polar bear fur just might do the trick. Some folks I know have brought special lamps that imitate sunlight to cure seasonal depression. |
