Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Slippery Rock has one of the top programs in Western Pennsylvania for international students and welcomes students and professors from every corner of the globe. Campus is not only multicultural, but it also offers classes and programs in diversity and women’s studies. The Black Action Society (BAS) is well-represented, as well as Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transsexuals, and Questioning (LGBTQ), a group supporting students of various sexualities, but many African American students say they wish for more historically black campus organizations. Many students agree that although SRU's population is infused with international culture, white, middle-class students make up the majority. Every color and creed is represented, but this is not to say that these separate groups always mix. Spoken tensions or hate crimes don’t exist, but certain groups stick together and resist interaction with others, which is most obvious in the dining halls, where student groups often segregate themselves into clumps. A relatively new organization, Building Bridges, was created in hopes of bridging the gaps between students of different backgrounds and has had a steady following and growth in membership since its creation.

Religious backgrounds are quite diverse, as the town of Slippery Rock is home to churches of various denominations. For a public university, campus is overflowing with Christian faith. Campus Crusade for Christ, an eclectic group of Christian students, always makes its presence felt. Unfortunately, other religions are overshadowed and venues for their worship are nonexistent. New programs and changes are always made, however, so your voice can always be heard if you wish it to be.

Diversity

Not a lot of differences. Most races just stick together, blacks with blacks & whites with whites, but the sports players and their friends mingle with the white girls if that counts.

It's Good to Be Different!

At Slippery Rock, we have numerous nationalities, races, political believes and sexual preferences. I feel that unlike High School where this could cause conflict, everyone is understanding and respects each individual for their choices and preferences.

Making Great Strides

SRU has many programs oriented towards all cultures, races and the LGBTQI community. They seem to be constantly trying to find new ways to bring everyone together towards a better understanding of each other.

Facts

Gay Pride

Through Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ), students who are part of the gay community or support those in it can come together to support one another, educate others, and build connections with the University community. This fun group is responsible for yearly “drag shows,” notable guest speakers, and other fun educational programs promoting awareness, diversity, understanding, and safe sex.

Political Activity

Most students and staff members are pretty liberal in their political views. Protests are occasionally held, and most students are usually passive toward political views. In general, SRU students are concerned but not outspoken. Those who are interested in politics usually share their passion with others by joining student political groups like the SRU Democrats or SRU Republicans.

Economic Status

Slippery Rock is made up of mostly students with middle-class backgrounds. There are, however, contingents of filthy rich and dirt poor students on campus, as well.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Slippery Rock is home to at least 10 minority organizations, excluding religious organizations and historically black fraternities and sororities. These groups are run and directed by students and sponsored by a faculty mentor. The various groups sponsor events on campus and often bring in musicians, actors, writers, and artists of various backgrounds to perform and educate the University community as a whole. These organizations include Black Action Society, Blue Key Honor Society, Building Bridges, Brother 2 Brother, Gospel Choir, the Latino Student Organization, LGBTQ, Native American Student Association, Sister 2 Sister, and the UPB Cultural Diversity Committee.
