Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Bulldozers and wrecking balls are a common sight at the Rock. The University recently finished a multimillion dollar face-lift, knocking down many of the 1970-something residence halls and replacing them with improved residential suites. Campus is currently a hodgepodge of new and old. Upper campus is a charming reminder of Slippery Rock’s educational history, where you can find Old Main’s clock tower (the symbol of SRU), the charming Maltby Career Center, and several other original buildings.

Lower campus is a conglomerate of drab classroom buildings and new facilities, including the Physical Therapy Building and the magnificent Science and Technology Building. One of the most popular places to hang out on campus is the recreation center, the ARC, which is home to the famous rock wall, basketball courts, many athletic programs, and state-of-the-art equipment. Overall, the University continues to rebuild and expand to make way for the growing on-campus population and to keep up with, and hopefully surpass, the competition of surrounding universities. Currently, a new University Union is in the works and intended to be constructed within the next couple years.

The ARC Rocks

The gym here is great, there is always something to do and someone you know there. The machines are usually full but there's a track to use along with the rockwall, courts, and swimming pool.

Our University Program Board holds various events as well, including, concerts, speakers, movie nights, and festivals. Bailey Library at SRU is another great location on campus for students to study, hang out, or grab a latte. There's not a single thing I don't love here!

Outdated

Overall they are fairly alright. Everything is a little outdated but in working order. As an art major, the ceramics studio gets a D- for being a pain to get to and the facilities in general there. The other parts of the art buildings are ok. The new sculpture building is great just wish it was bigger.

Favorite Things To Do

Although things can get kind of dull in such a small town, there’s usually always something to do on campus. Between classes, students will surf the internet on the computers in Bailey Library or hangout on nice days in the gazebo in the Quad. There are also many events planned every week including art gallery showings, concerts, and speakers. Vendors also come to SRU selling posters, jewelry, and clothes.

During common hour—12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday—you will spot many students hanging out in the University Union. Many sororities and fraternities can be found hanging out and eating lunch in Rocky’s Grille, and other organizations and groups of friends gather and meet at the seating area in the Union lobby. On nice days, students can be found in the Quad reading, doing homework, or playing with a Frisbee or football. SRU also hosts a variety of concerts and celebrity acts throughout the year. Some of SRU’s most notable performances in recent years have been the Gym Class Heroes, Ludacris, Dierks Bentley, Dave Chappelle, and Jimmy Fallon.

Did You Know?

Rumor has it that the foundations of the Aebersold Recreational Center and Founders Hall are both several feet below their original surface points. In other words, the buildings are sinking!

At the Macosky Center, an environmental center located on the outskirts of campus, students can pay for their own area to grow plants and vegetables.
