Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Anybody can tell from the sidewalk chalk ads all over campus that Greek life booms at Slippery Rock. While many of the Greeks are somewhat comparable to Bluto and Otter from Animal House, they also do a lot of service on campus and in the local community. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, many Greeks came together and raised funds for relief efforts, and to promote Homeless Awareness Week, they conducted several food and clothing drives before visiting shelters. Greek life also sponsors many on-campus programs, from educational series of guest speakers to campus-wide, non-alcoholic mix-off against drunk driving.

The pressure to become a brother or a sister is felt the most during rush when recruitments for the new semester begin, but nobody will force you into anything you don’t want to do. However, most students recommend looking into fraternities and sororities to network with people and to make friends. If you go this route, remember that you will have to pay monetary dues and commit a lot of your time to be a part of the organization. Besides social fraternities, SRU is also home to many professional fraternities where students can network with professionals in their fields of study, learn valuable skills, and socialize with students of similar majors. Don’t worry, if you don’t want to go Greek, then there are plenty of other organizations to look into on campus where you can meet new people and get involved. Though the Greek population is prominent, not everyone at SRU knows the Greek alphabet backwards or whips each other with wooden paddles.

Greek Life at Slippery Rock

I personally am not in a Sorority because I cannot afford to pay the dues, but I have encountered the sororities and they are all very nice girls. I have guy friends who are also in fraternities and all of the guys are nice as well. The greek life at Slippery Rock really breaks the "frat boy" stereotype.

No Greek Life Needed

There is nothing wrong with Greek life! And here, there is also nothing wrong with not being a part of Greek life! There are, of course, always going to be frat parties but you don't have to go to them to have a good time here. There are other options and plenty of opportunities to get to know people without needing to be a part of Greek life.
