Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Anybody can tell from the sidewalk chalk ads all over campus that Greek life booms at Slippery Rock. While many of the Greeks are somewhat comparable to Bluto and Otter from Animal House, they also do a lot of service on campus and in the local community. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, many Greeks came together and raised funds for relief efforts, and to promote Homeless Awareness Week, they conducted several food and clothing drives before visiting shelters. Greek life also sponsors many on-campus programs, from educational series of guest speakers to campus-wide, non-alcoholic mix-off against drunk driving.

The pressure to become a brother or a sister is felt the most during rush when recruitments for the new semester begin, but nobody will force you into anything you don’t want to do. However, most students recommend looking into fraternities and sororities to network with people and to make friends. If you go this route, remember that you will have to pay monetary dues and commit a lot of your time to be a part of the organization. Besides social fraternities, SRU is also home to many professional fraternities where students can network with professionals in their fields of study, learn valuable skills, and socialize with students of similar majors. Don’t worry, if you don’t want to go Greek, then there are plenty of other organizations to look into on campus where you can meet new people and get involved. Though the Greek population is prominent, not everyone at SRU knows the Greek alphabet backwards or whips each other with wooden paddles.

Greeks Not Viewed Positively

I have given Greek life a B- since they are viewed poorly amongst my peers. Most of the Greek life participate in underage drinking and do not do too much volunteer activities. Also, Slippery Rock University does not allow Greek housing. Most people view them as people who just want to engage in drinking activities and that they are not creating a positive environment or reflecting our school positively.

Not My Thing

Personally, I'm not into the whole greek thing, but from an outsiders point of view SRU has great greek life. A lot of people participate in frats and sororities and they seem to really enjoy them.
