With swarms of police buzzing down Kiester Road and infiltrating campus, security is pretty tight on and off campus. Every residence hall is on lockdown with ID access, locked doors sealing every stairway, video surveillance, and on-site University staff. One may say that all of these measures are excessive, but it keeps the crime rate here extremely low. Of course, there are quite a few liquor law violations and the occasional incidents of minor theft. With more than 8,000 students coming and going on campus each day, some crime is expected—and the campus and local police are ready for it.

Though most students feel safe and consider crime here nonexistent, some female students feel insecure walking alone at night. Some areas of campus are darker and more secluded than others, and it is important that students take precautions. If you park your car on campus, avoid storing valuables like CDs or money there because distant parking lots, like East Lake, are hot spots for theft. Though Slippery Rock is a friendly town where it is easy to trust everyone you meet, you must remember that crime can happen anywhere, even in this peaceful, nestled little villa. So, avoid walking alone at night, lock your doors, always be aware, and use common sense. The same rules would apply anywhere, really.

People Don't Realize the Options

Many people don't realize that there are security escorts available if a person feels unsafe. All they have to do is call the security office and someone will be sent over immediately. I don't know of many colleges that offer this kind of thing, but it's nice to know that they are there.

Health and Safety of Slippery Rock University

Slippery Rock University has a through team of police officers and instruments on campus, like emergency buttons and police cruisers that make the rounds around campus, especially on the weekend. Slippery Rock is a small college town and a pretty low crime area, so if something does happen the police respond pretty quickly to any type of emergency. The University is a dry campus, meaning no alcohol, so that rule is enforced routinely by the police. Overall I think that the campus is a safe place to be and stay, just because of the low crime activity as it is and all the extra precautions shows that the school takes safety seriously.

Excellent Safety Measures

Slippery Rock is a very safe and secure place. Campus police are on call at several areas in the streets. You can report anything with anonymity and I have never had any problems with students here. There haven't been significant outbreaks outside the norm for any institution.
