  • Decide on a major early, rather than staying undeclared untill senior year.
  • Frats are only fun for the first few weeks of school.
  • It takes a while to walk to class, especially in the snow—so leave early.
  • Most students here graduate in five years.
  • The majority of class sizes are small—your teacher will notice if you are absent!

Slippery Rock Is Different, That's for Sure

We have some really odd weekly things that we do here, but it's all in good fun. As usual, we have Green and White Fridays for school spirit. On that day, we also have Rub the Rock for good luck because we have a huge rock in the middle of our quad. We also do Thursdays in Black to fight against violence. This is something that I find different, but interesting to see how many people actually participate. At random times throughout the year there will be small prizes given to random participants in these days through different organizations.

Perfect for Me

My favorite part about SRU is how it's not too big, but it's also not too small. With 8,000 kids on campus its easy to meet new people, but you never feel overwhelmed. The dorms are so nice, and I was happy to hear that freshman could live in the suite-style dorms because other schools I had visited only allowed upperclassmen.

Community!

The community at Slippery Rock is absolutely incredible. My first week here, I was so welcomed and felt really good to be there. Slippery Rock is also known for their Exercise Science and education programs, so many of the students take advantage of that.

Facts

Traditions
  • Homecoming: Homecoming has been a long-running tradition at SRU. A king and queen are crowned at halftime of the football game, and a ceremony is held in their honor. A few years back the theme for was “Rock the ‘80s” and even included a visit from Dennis Haskins, best known as Mr. Belding on the popular 1980s television series Saved by the Bell. The traditional homecoming parade marches through downtown allowing returning alumni and friends the chance to see downtown redevelopment efforts.
  • Rock the ARC: Throughout the semester, Residence Life sponsors many late-night events to promote campus fun without the alcohol. Rock the ARC has been a reoccurring event held at the ARC, which usually fits a theme (i.e. carnival). Students listen to music, compete for prizes, get freebies from the University and community, and engage in many fun and free activities.
Urban Legends Whats in a Name? - Many people ask, “How did the town and University get the name Slippery Rock?” Legend has it that, in 1779, Colonel Daniel Brodhead was in command of Fort Pitt in present-day Pittsburgh. Colonel Brodhead pleaded with General George Washington to allow him to lead an expedition into the wilderness. Then, the troops, marching near a creek about 50 miles north of Fort Pitt, encountered a local tribe of Seneca Indians. The soldiers crossed the creek at a place where the stream bed was made up of of large, smooth rocks. Wearing heavy boots, the soldiers crossed safely, whereas the pursuing Seneca, wearing moccasins, slipped and fell on the rocks. The Seneca Indians called the stream “Wechachochapohka,” which means “slippery rock.” Of course, the details of the legend vary depending upon who tells the tale. Another version has the militia in hot pursuit of the Seneca, with the boot-wearing soldiers losing their balance on the rocks. When asked which version is correct, former resident expert and fourth generation alumnus, Dr. Robert Watson, Vice President for Student Affairs, is likely to offer a wry smile and say, “Now the Seneca lived in the area for hundreds of years, and the militia soldiers were the newcomers. Who do you think was more likely to slip?”
