Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Slippery Rock, a typical, small college town, has a variety of off-campus restaurants that are tailored to the quintessential tight student budget. Driving through Slippery Rock, cheap meal deal advertisements grab you, from Camelot’s famous 99-cent breakfast to McDonald’s value meals. Most of the food in town is cheap, but with great deals, comes a lot of grease. On the other hand, Slippery Rock has been graced by Ginger Hill Tavern and the North Country Brewery, which are both great places to take a date, or persuade your parents to take you when they visit. Ginger Hill, a popular night spot, becomes packed with students after dark. Watch out, though, because once the nightlife begins, underagers are not allowed in. At the brewery, you can catch a live band and try the famous sampler of microbrews. For other family restaurants not doused in grease, students can go to Luigi’s Pizza House or travel to adjacent Butler or Grove City for Eat ‘n Park, Kings, or Perkins.

It is common to see Slippery Rock students walking around campus clad in green Bob’s Subs T-shirts. The fad advertises the sandwich shop, which serves up hot subs famous for the crusty, delictable bread and heavy mayo. Pizza shops, namely Coffaro’s and Dominos, thrive from student business. All pizza places, as well as En Lai, the local Chinese restaurant, deliver directly to on-campus residence halls. Overall, Slippery Rock food is far from international gourmet cuisine, but it's convenient to fit frugal student lifestyles.

A Mix of Things

Slippery Rock really has a mix of restaurants and dining facilities downtown. There's the obligatory McDonald's and Sheetz but then there are also more unique places like Ginger Hill and The Brewery. No matter what you're looking for, you'll be able to find a place to dine with your visiting parents or grab sandwiches with your friends. There are just limited options.

Facts

Did You Know?
  • The name "Ginger Hill Tavern" derived from founder Stephen Cooper's alleged practice of coloring the tavern's watered-down whiskey with ginger.
  • Many students who stay on campus for the weekend take advantage of the 99 cent breakfast at Camelot's on Main Street. It's a great way to get a good breakfast and not break the bank! But you better get there early—on weekends, there's often a line out the door of people waiting for a table.
