Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are plenty off-campus housing options in and around the Slippery Rock area. Most students rave about the freedom of off-campus living with the absence of Community Assistants (CAs) and dry campus restrictions. While the cost of living is much lower and students are not contracted to meal plans, the off-campus option has some drawbacks. Usually, if you want to go this route, you must find one or more roomies to join you, otherwise, you will be stuck living in off-campus dormitories like Towers or Summit. The housing market in Slippery Rock has been booming in recent years with the opening of several apartment complexes where students can choose to live in luxury. And, when compared to universities where open land is a rare commodity, the rural setting at SRU makes for some cheap rents compared to some schools in Pittsburgh. Many SRU students up the ante on rent to get a taste of luxury at The Heights, which opened in fall 2008, and The Ivy, which opened in fall 2007. There’s also Stone Crest Apartments, which opened in fall 2007. The South Rock Apartments are also a great option for students who want something a little more upscale. Students who don’t want to go the apartment route can split the rent on local houses. Many of are old with maintenance problems, but once in a while, you can find a great deal.

Some popular off-campus apartments include Campus Side, Pine Glen (Kiester), Martha Rose, and Cooper Street Apartments. All of these typical apartments are affordable—the more rent you pay per person, the better quality the apartment is. Campus Side students agree that the security and value of living is a great plus. Kiester Apartments are cheap but not very desirable. It seems that students commonly pay their security deposit and deface the property as they wish. One positive of the Kiester Apartments is there's always a party somewhere on weekends. There are a few important things to remember before signing a lease anywhere—some apartments are not furnished, some do not include utilities or water in the rent, and you should always check out a place before you sign away your hard-earned paycheck. You don’t always get what you pay for.

Not Bad

The apartments at Slippery Rock University are quite quaint. They are not too expensive and many of them come fully furnished. The only problem I have come across if the distance from campus to the apartments. Other than that, all of them are very nice and reasonably priced.

I Like My Apartment

I got an apartment for my sophomore year, and didn't really have any problems getting it. The rent is reasonable, but it did come unfurnished with only a stove and fridge. It definitely saved me a lot of money compared to the dorms though (there are some expensive apartments though so be careful!). It's pretty close to campus, like a 15-20 minute walk, but I usually drive there anyway. Pros to having an apartment: freedom, you don't need to buy a meal plan (Ew boozel), and saves money (for me at least). Cons: can keep you "out of the loop."

Better Than Most Schools

THe off campus housing is amazing. There are many places to choose from and the costs are reasonable. Some have limited parking and you may end up in their overflow lot but normally this does not happen. The landlords are nice and are easy to talk to. Maintainance crews work fast when they are informed of a problem. They are safe places to live with problems rarely occuring.
