College Prowler Take
A lot of questions about dating focus on the trouble that girls have meeting guys—but that’s not the complaint of every Smithie. Some are perfectly content taking a break from dating, and spend their college years connecting with friends and focusing on schoolwork. Others students like girls, and being at a school with so many women offers dating opportunities for gay students that most coed schools do not. However, that does not mean that every gay student is happy with the dating scene. It's hard for straight girls looking for a relationship. There is an informal straight-girl network—they go to parties together and try to introduce each other to guys. The best bet for meeting guys is usually to take classes off campus, or get involved in activities that interact with other campuses a lot. Meeting a guy who wants a relationship is tough, and many girls either get really desperate and stay with guys who aren’t that great, or they realize how much energy dating takes and ask themselves if it’s really worth it. Finding a heterosexual relationship while at a single-sex institution is work.

Rarely will you see a boy that matches your preference. The Boston and Worcester accents drive me nuts. There are not many college guys; it’s mostly old, sketchy men. Beware of stalkers: they come in multitudes. |

It appears to be very homosexual. Although, that doesn’t mean that everyone identifies as a lesbian. There seems to be a lot of free love happening, as in no commitments. Some people are committed, but they seem to live on Green Street. |

It’s a hormonal scene. People like each other and are attracted to each other, and there are relationships, but there’s this hormonal excitement. There’s a lot of energy, and everyone notices other people. It’s exciting to be in an atmosphere where you can appreciate being attracted to people and sometimes acting on it. But it’s not about objectification. |

Social Scene
Due to the house system, students can find it hard to meet people who aren't in their houses. Therefore, many relationships and hookups, as well as friendships, tend to be centered around the student's house. However, through clubs, teams, classes, and parties, most students are able to meet people through a variety of social networks.
Hookups or Relationships?
For those Smithies interested in guys, they often stick with long-distance relationships or random, weekend hookups. There are many girls, however, who find nice boys from the surrounding area to date. For the gay community of Smith, the dating scene offers a few more options. There are a large number of people who develop serious relationships with people in their houses (which can lead to dramatic breakups). There are also a lot of random hookups—though many have learned the hard way that what felt random that night, is not so random at a small school.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
For a random hookup, any house party or Amherst or UMass party has potential for meeting guys. However, the Smithie looking for more than a one-night stand has to get creative. Many meet guys by taking classes off campus, through friends at other schools, or by frequenting local bars. It’s definitely hit or miss, though, and many straight girls are in long-distance relationships.
Dress Code
Most students dress however they want—it ranges from preppy to crunchy to punk. It’s definitely a school where you can wear almost anything, including everything from homemade pants to mohawks to Steve Madden shoes. There is, however, a dominant “Smith look”: cuffed jeans, vintage T-shirts, trucker hats, and facial piercings.
