Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

“If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes.” This old saying absolutely speaks true to the Pioneer Valley, where it can go from bright and sunny to cold and rainy in a few minutes. However, the area is famous for its crisp, cool falls with incredible foliage. While Northampton winters are very snowy and very cold, they can also be strikingly beautiful. They last from November until March, which makes some students a little stir-crazy and can turn a walk to the library, downtown, or even class into an epic expedition.

Even students from nearby states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey complain that it is significantly colder than expected here. But waiting for spring at Smith is absolutely worth it. As soon as the weather hits a balmy 60 degrees and sunny, Smith students can be found on lawns all over the campus working on their summer tans.

It's New England. What Do You Expect?1

Yes, Smith College is in the heart of Western Massachusetts. This means we get snow. I've always lived in New England so I love the winter months but for students from warmer climates, the colder months here are something to get used to.

Typical New England Weather

humid summer and cold snowy/rainy winter, but spring and fall are PERFECT. the weather is far better fall semester than spring semester. it could be a lot worse - the weather's even more severe in the midwest. but if you really can't handle snow or cold for long periods of time, like, if that's actually a dealbreaker for you, then you probably shouldn't come to school here.

Why are you complaining?

Weather is very mild. Occasionally, there's some snow, but the temperatures are quite mild and the weather doesn't change without warning. Invest in a good umbrella, though, and be aware that it does get to be windy at times.
