Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

SMU PD is lenient with students and drinking on campus—to an extent. If you are carrying a bottle of beer around a party, they will kindly suggest that you pour the beer into a plastic cup. If you pass out at a party somewhere, or seem belligerent, they will no longer give you the blind eye. The campus police will take care of you and make sure that you are safe. Students belittle the SMU PD but forget that they are just doing their job. The simplest rule to follow is this: practice good judgment. This means you should make sure your door in your dorm room is closed before you start crushing cans on your head. Don’t get into a car with a drunk driver, because you can be guilty just by association. Walk off the bus—don’t tumble. Avoid carrying open containers anywhere on campus. And finally, lock up your liquor!

The campus police are aware that students are young and away from home and will make poor decisions every now and then. They act as the fun aunt or uncle from back home that will take care of you, but refrain from telling your parents about your minor offense. Once you step out of the realm of small offenses, it is an entirely different ball game. It is common for an SMU student to have one alcohol violation, but most never receive a second one.

Underage Drinking Not Tolerated

I give this an A- because the police are pretty strict about underage drinking and they absolutely should be. It's not an A+ because it is still possible to get away with being drunk if you know what you're doing. Underage drinking is a tremendous mistake and SMU continues to expand its policies and procedures to prevent students from not only drinking underage, but drinking to the point where alcohol poisoning becomes a possibility.

Not Too Strict

The university is under the jurisdiction of four different police departments, but it's not really all that strict. You can party, but girls feel pretty safe too.

Yeah ... OD on Drugs and Participate in Underaged Drinking. but DO NOT. DO NOT Park in the Wrong Spot.

The campus is pretty safe. The university got into a bit of hot water a couple years ago, because some kids overdosed on drugs or something. Frats obviously hold lots of parties. They don't seem to really get in any trouble.

I will say, though, that campus police are OBNOXIOUSLY thorough with parking tickets. If you choose SMU in the end, do yourself a favor and make sure to follow ALL parking rules at ALL times. Don't assume that you won't get caught if you're trying to rush and drop something off for a professor or something. Always keep in mind: Murphy's Law.
