Comparable Schools' Computers Grades:
Quick Stats24-Hour Labs?
Yes - The 24-hour lab is in Java City. It is not really a “lab” at all; instead, there are about 10 computers lined up against the wall in the café.
College Prowler Take
Having a computer on campus is always a blessing, but it is mainly for those who would rather do schoolwork at home as opposed to walking to a library to face a time limit. When I was a freshman, I did not have a printer. The dorms feature computer outlets in every room as well as computers and printers in the main lobbies. I would type my paper in my room, save it on a disk, and travel downstairs to print it. The entire process was simplistic and painless. I have only had to use the 24-hour computer lab in the student center a few times, and it has never been full. The only problem with those computers is that they do not allow you to save your Word documents or anything of that sort onto a disk. You either have to e-mail it to yourself or ask for assistance from the help desk. Those computers are primarily for checking e-mail and surfing the Internet. The computers in libraries are used more to do homework and research. Many students choose to write papers in those spots because something about the library forces them to focus. All of the computers on campus are up-to-date and are constantly being replaced with new ones. The only pain is printing. You must first buy a copy card, put money on it, and then proceed to print. What seems odd to me is that SMU is well-endowed but has poor computer facilities.

I don't know why you wouldn't have your own computer by the time you get to college, but if you don't, get one ASAP. Most of the time, the labs and libraries have computers available, but during exams it's a lot tougher to find an empty computer. Just get a laptop, and you will be fine.

The labs are not very crowded. I lasted my freshman year without a computer, but it was a hassle to walk to the labs to print the papers. |

Having a computer is convenient, but not necessary. I rarely take my laptop to the library. There are about eight libraries, most of which have computer labs. I study there and use those computers. As far as the network goes, it is fast and the tech department is pretty helpful. We even have our own computer store. |

The computer network is not great. It is only suitable for surfing the Internet. Anything else is either banned or not supported by the campus. It makes free time difficult to enjoy. You should bring your computer for sure, but expect to encounter some problems if you are not a casual user. |

I have never had a problem getting on a computer at the library. There are also tons of computer labs in the ME and EE buildings. I would say that you definitely need to bring your own computer because most professors e-mail you assignments. It is really annoying and inconvenient to walk all the way to the library just to check your e-mail. |
