Great Safety

Drugs here compared to other schools are very very minimal I went to a The University of Texas @ Austin before I transferred here and there was COKE, E, Xanax, anything you can name. At SMU the safety here is great the worst drug here is WEED but what college doesn't have that present.

Great Here

The reputation for greek life now a days is all about parties, drugs, and drinking. At SMU drinking is present but all the guys and girls are very nice people trying to become active in their community! The Greek Life at SMU is what the definition of what GREEK is supposed to be life helping the community out and making the school a better place! IT'S AWESOME!

Very Safe

Safety is not really an issue. The SMU police are out driving around all day, and even at night, there are no threats to one's safety. It is safe to walk around at all hours of the day and night, but be advised the the north quad dorms back up to a street. Dorm are gotten into using your ID card, so you do not have to worry about people getting into the dorm who do not belong there.

Great Classes, Great Teachers, Great Majors

The academics at SMU are top notch. You learn a lot in your classes, and within your major your teachers will challenge you in a good way. As a transfer from Syracuse University to SMU, I was skeptical about how good SMU's art program would be, but it is great. The drawing and painting teachers really know how to teach while still allowing personal freedom. Whatever your major, you will need to study and put in some time and effort. Teachers have office hours, so don't be afraid to ask if you need help. They are very friendly.

Dry Campus Issues

There is no alcohol allowed on the campus. Underage students attempt to get drunk at the frat houses before the parties are busted, and transported to a bar. This means many underage students have fake ID's, and are often in dangerous situations when they are drinking heavily off campus.

Oh So Southern

Many of the students at this campus come from extremely wealthy conservative families. Most of the students are active in Greek life, and it is very hard to assimilate to the environment. The campus is not very open to diversity.

No Problem With Availability

There are apartments everywhere, however since SMU is in a very rich part of Dallas if you want an amazing apartment right next to campus they can get upwards of $1000 per month, however if you have a car and don't mind a 4 minuets drive there are also plenty of places a little farther away that are very cheap. Everything is very very safe, again SMU is in a very wealth part of Dallas.

Park N Pony

Temporary parking passes only permit you to park in about 30 spots, and so during the first weeks of school/the semester it is very difficult to not get ticketed. Also, when visitors come I feel there is not enough free parking space allotted to them. The parking that is behind Cockrell McIntosh would also be much more convenient if there was entry through the back door. Moving in and out is a difficult task the way parking is set up on campus. Also, the school makes students move their cars before football games which doesn't seem fair considering we live by the parking lots, pay tuition and parking fees and also attend the games.

Nice Facilities, but Large Lack of Participation

We have a nice stadium and an ever-improving football team, but student involvement in lacking. Boulevarding (tailgating) before the games is very popular, but most students (especially Greek) Boulevard before hand and skip the games which leads to disappointing attendance. However, with a schedule of more competitive opponents in the coming years, there is hope for improvement.

A Long Way to Go

SMU is home to a homogenous student body filled to the brim with attractive, well-to-do, smart people. Not everyone here is stuck up, and there are a lot of kind and sweet people. Democrats are scarce, as well are openly gay students.

Guys and Girls

They guys are very good looking and the girls are just ridiculous in how good looking they are. One of the best looking student bodies I thing EVER!

ALEC

The Alec is a tutoring center that all sudents can use for free. It is great because even if they do not have a tutor in the subject you want if you give them enough notice they will find one for you. Very helpful service SMU offers.

Lots

parties every night, if thats what you're looking for, beautiful campus, really intense on greek life, academics are really good, networking is probably among top in the nation, campus life is pretty good, friendly people, lots of study abroad programs, social scene is really good, and facilities are great, especially the gym. Girls are absolutely drop dead gorgeous, I mean models and dallas cowboys cheerleaders go here! Its Ridiculous! Lots of rich kids flaunting daddy's money though, with their trust funds as a life safety net they make the university one of the top ranked in night life. If thats what you're into, I don't blame you, but its tough for some to handle though and it gets a little ridiculous. Campus PD are really strict, and police from 4 different stations roll through campus, so you're safe, unless you're a person who likes to drink, in which case I say get an apartment off campus, because otherwise you're going to get an alcohol violation or two eventually.

Most Diversity I Have Experienced

I grew up in a mostly white area and never experienced cultural diversity or acceptance. Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University seeks to include all persons, and celebrates all races, colors, genders, sexual orientations, denominations, and cultures.

Plethora of Food!

SMU has a wonderful location, full of dining options that range from fast food to fine dining. Cost varies as well, but everything is reasonably priced. I love Bubba's Chicken, La Madeleine, and of course Chick-Fil-A!

Diversity

Diversity is an important aspect here and it's a great place to feel accepted.

Wonderful Professors, Challenging but Not Too Stressful

The title really says it all. The professors are very willing to help students and want you to succeed. They're truly the best academic asset SMU has. The work can be hard, but its not usually that stressful.

Professors Help Find Your Potential

I have been to a state university as well as a community college and I must say the professors at SMU are immensely challenging. They really know how to get you to tap into your full potential and creativity - often without you realizing that you had it. They can open your mind to subjects you never thought would interest you and delicately push you to find motivation.

Proud to Be a Mustang!

Southern Methodist University (SMU) is seriously the best college you could attend. The people are nice, the classes are fun, and the college itself is gorgeous to look at. I had an easy time fitting in and making friends because everyone was so friendly. I'm so glad I chose SMU and to be a Mustang. Pony up!

Mashed Potatoes With Gravy

The food really is great. There are plenty of options such as a sandwich bar, salad bar, sushi bar, and this changes frequently. There are also other places to eat on campus such as Einstein's Bagels, Chik-Fil-A, Pizza Hut, and more.

Best University in the South!

Southern Methodist University is indeed a prestigious center of education in the heart of Dallas, Texas but it is also a second home to many. The campus is breathtakingly beautiful, people smile everywhere (thanks to southern hospitality), and the academics are challenging and enriching. The professors know you by name and are always happy to help. The smaller classes and comfortable atmosphere makes SMU a first-class college!

Dream World

We live in one of the nicer sides of town, so safety is optimal and there's police for both SMU and the smaller suburb town we are in. The area is nice, but not exclusive to those in the lower & middle class. Dallas has a LOT to offer, and is a hidden gem that's not too crowded with tourists. There's always something going on downtown, since they are trying to up the ante around here. Honestly, I don't know of one thing you name and cannot find in Dallas (besides a beach...haha). The local stores are very welcoming of the college lifestyle, and often have discounts in surrounding places. The corporate world highly respects SMU grads, partly because a lot of alums stay in Dallas.

Athletics at SMU

The university offers many athletic facilities for all kinds of sports. Many students are involved in a sport but most attend the work out center everyday. Football is definitely a huge part of SMU and the fan support is amazing. Going to a football game is one of the best experiences here at SMU.

Diversity at Southern Methodist University

Although SMU is predominantly White, the university does try to promote diversity and make all students feel welcome. The student center has a department specific for multicultural students that offers programs and mentors to students that might not feel welcome. I am a minority at SMU and I do not feel isolated. I love SMU and I am definitely going to miss it when I graduate.
