Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s a shame that athletics at Southwestern are so overshadowed by academics, fine arts, and Greek life, because the teams are actually pretty good. It isn’t that no one plays sports on campus; it’s just that the campus community isn’t very involved in cheering them on. This probably boils down to a couple key factors. First of all, Southwestern doesn’t have a football team, and second, the school does not offer athletic scholarships. On most college campuses, football is the sport around which the entire student body rallies and builds a sense of athletic pride off of which the other sports can thrive. SU lacks that drive. In addition, since SU doesn’t offer athletic scholarships, no one comes to SU “just to play baseball.” However, even if IM and varsity sports don’t run the show, you can bet that ultimate Frisbee on the mall will always be a highly visible part of campus life.

Despite all this, the athletics at Southwestern are pretty good, for what they are. As long as participation in athletics thrives (and undoubtedly it will), students at SU are bound to be content with the state of the programs. After all, no one comes to Southwestern expecting it to be a powerhouse basketball school. And really, as long as Frisbees precariously whiz by students on the mall, most SU students will feel like they’re getting their fill of sports. While sports may not play a pivotal role on campus, most students do enjoy a friendly IM game every now and then, or make good use of the sports equipment provided by SIRA (Southwestern Intramural and Recreational Activities). It’s just too bad that more people don’t come to the games.

There but Kind of Dead

We have lots of very talented students on our sports team, but it often seems that many SU students don't recognize this or even care. SU is already pretty unified thanks to the size of our school, but even though I am not an athlete, I feel like our school athletes deserve way more credit and praise, especially given their success athletically along with their success academically.

Basketball Games Are Fun

My roommate is on the basketball team so I go to every game, which are pretty fun, I would say that those games get higher attendance than any other sporting team. Although people come to SU for academics and the atmosphere, not to have an Awesome football team.

Most Popular Sports

Southwestern’s most popular (and visible) sport is ultimate Frisbee. There’s a casual game on the mall almost every day. Lacrosse and soccer are also quite popular.

Most Overlooked Teams

The SU tennis and cross-country teams both deserve more credit than they receive.

School Spirit

For a school without a football team, school spirit at SU ranges from adequate to okay. Tons of people wear Pirate gear (especially the sweatshirts) from the bookstore, and most students have a Southwestern decal adorning their car. The frats and sororities are constantly wearing matching T-shirts, as are the sports teams. At some events, zealous Southwestern students will dress up (somewhat ironically) like Pirates. Even though this may elicit eye-rolling from the more jaded students, most of campus embraces our goofy mascot and tongue-in-cheek school pride. Pretty much all of the students at SU are happy with the school, and partake in on-campus activities. The few malcontents are usually quiet about their grievances.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are available in abundance for any SU sporting event.

Best Place to Take a Walk

While there are no nature trails on campus, there are lots of beautiful places on campus to go exploring or just sit and enjoy nature. Some favorites are under the trees on the mall and the big tree out behind the softball field. There are also lots of local places to wander, such as San Gabriel Park and the old cemetery right behind the school.
