College Prowler Take
For the first semester of a student’s freshman year, there is a “visiting hours” policy in the first-year dorms. The policy states that men cannot be in women’s dorms (and vice-versa) after midnight Sunday–Thursday, or after 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. This policy is repealed second semester. If you are being noisy with your guest of the opposite gender after their visiting hours are up, it is quite likely that you will be caught, especially if you live in Ruter, Kurth, or Brown-Cody. However, there is no punishment for a one-time infraction, just a slap on the wrist and the quick removal of your guest. If you are drinking alcohol underage or smoking marijuana in your dorm room, there is a good chance that you will be caught. Some RAs will be lenient and simply ask you to stop (or just join you). Others will narc on you and ruin your permanent record.
Most of the time, the administration is lenient with alcohol infractions; however, there’s always a risk that you will be “made an example of” to scare other students into line. Everything was smooth sailing for the boys on Ruter Three, until one day there was a random drug-dog search that landed several students in police custody. In short, the fury of Southwestern disciplinarians is sporadic and difficult to predict. About 90 percent of the time, you can do whatever you want, but there’s always that one-in-ten chance that you’re about to get busted.

Campus is not very strict on drinking, like every other campus in the world. I know that they have drug-sniffing dogs, though. |

It seems that every once in awhile the University cracks down and makes an example of someone, but otherwise, if you want to get drunk, it isn’t very hard at all. |

Beer is widely accepted. Everything else will get you in trouble, but it’s really hard to get expelled, since the school is concerned with its retention rate. |
