College Prowler Take
Due in large part to its affluent student body, the Southwestern computer labs are anything but crowded. Almost every student brings their own brand-new laptop, but if you don’t, it’s no big deal. The SLC is open 24 hours and is usually desolate, except around finals. One habit you have to get into when you arrive at SU: checking your e-mail about 30 times a day. There are constantly campus-wide e-mails being shot around, and almost every club on campus has a listserv. Unless you want to miss meetings and be completely out of the loop, you’d better be prepared to spend a lot of time checking your inbox. Southwestern is practically filled to the brim with computers. The only downside to SU’s computer scene is that they still don’t have wireless in the dorms, just in McCombs and the library. Besides that, there isn’t much to complain about. ITS provides virus and spyware software and updates to keep the system running smoothly, and they provide helpful solutions to problems at their help desks. The biggest perk that most students don’t appreciate is the relentless help of the ITS people at SU, who will fix your computer free of charge. This is just one more example of the advantages of going to a small school. Another added perk is the free printing, and access to scanning and color printing for a small fee.

Everyone seems to have a computer...
Everyone seems to have a computer here, so maybe it’s a good idea to bring your own, too. I think the computer lab is usually available, though, since no one uses it because they all have their own computers. Except during the ends of semester and such—I think then it gets kind of crowded. I usually use my laptop. Also, if you get campus Internet, get the fastest speed. It costs more money, but it will save you a headache. |

I think you should bring your own...
I think you should bring your own computer as a matter of convenience, because there is a lot of work here, and it’s nice to be able to walk over to your desk and write a paper and then take a break and talk to your friends in the hall. It is just a matter of how willing you are to walk over to the lab every time you need to do research or type a little paper. |

It is easiest to bring your own...
It is easiest to bring your own computer, but certainly not required. Although the computer lab is crowded during normal busy times (lunch, Sunday nights), there is almost always a seat. Not to mention the tons of computers all over the library (and laptops available for checkout). |

When my laptop broke (okay, when I spilled Coke on the keyboard), the ITS people at Southwestern fixed it for free. It made me feel like I’m getting my tuition’s worth! |

There are only a few computer labs, but most of the time, there are plenty of computers open because most people bring their own. |
