Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Southwestern tries so hard to appear diverse, but every student here knows the truth—SU is basically a school full of white kids from affluent families. Even the kids that aren’t “rich” definitely aren’t poor, they’re just upper-middle-class. If you take a gander at the student parking lots at SU, you’ll see plenty of new cars and very few clunkers. Southwestern students generally come from one of two backgrounds: the big cities (Austin, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, or San Antonio) or the small towns. The big city kids usually have a hard time adjusting to the sheer homogeneity of campus, while kids from the small towns feel more at home.

The lack of recognition and the religious affiliation tend to be deterrents for students who would diversify SU by attending, and few students want to be labeled as outsiders in such a homogenous environment. Southwestern’s lack of diversity is something the administration is always trying to remedy by offering scholarships to minority students. Statistics show that in the future, there may be more out-of-state and minority students on campus.

Out of Staters Beware

While the number of out of state students does seem to be rising, the school isn't working to accommodate them at all. There are many issues that will arise living at Southwestern if Texas isn't your home. Getting to the airport is probably the biggest issue, especially if the best option flight to get home leaves at 8am. There's also the issue of culture shock. While it should be expected on a certain level, it can really put a divide between the in-state and the out-of-state. If you're brave enough to move to Texas, then it means you probably want to experience new things. The Texans here absolutely do NOT. Most of them can't even imagine being two hours away from home, and they won't understand why you are even here. They won't want to learn anything from you about what it's like to live outside of Texas, and in the end, will not appreciate the little diversity you are bringing to the school.

80+% Texans

Diversity never really comes up here. That could be due to the seemingly total lack of it. It never seems to become a problem though, the few culturally different students seem to be treated completely normally.

Strong Diversity Besides Racial

Southwestern is full with students with all sorts of different backgrounds, just none of those backgrounds happen to be racial.

How would you best describe the political beliefs of campus as a whole?

Facts

Gay Pride

The Southwestern population does not have what one may call ‘gay pride,’ but there is a lot more tolerance than one would imagine from the seemingly conservative body. Those that are ‘out’ on campus happen to be ‘extremely out’ and are accepted by the majority on campus. Although heteronormativity runs rampant through the campus, there are groups such as SU Allies which is a meeting place for GLBTQIA students and their supporters.

Political Activity

There is a large amount of political activity on campus. Students usually have a hard time pinning down the main political beliefs as most are surprised by the amount of liberals SU contains on a campus of seemingly all rich, white, right-winged students. From campus politics in Student Congress to larger scale politics of the United States, you will find the Southwestern population is, for the most part, very active for their beliefs.

Economic Status

Most students come from upper-middle-class families, and many are from the wealthiest of classes. Some students complain about all the “rich, white kids” on campus.

Most Common Religions

As Southwestern is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, this sect of Protestant Christianity happens to be the most prevalent. Coming in at a very close second is the declared Atheist sector. The Christian community is quite prevalent through Southwestern’s Christian Sorority, the Phi Lamb’s, and Christian Fraternity, the Kappa Chi’s.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Ebony is a club established in order to support the unity of African Americans on the Southwestern campus and beyond as well as enhance and awareness and appreciation of the culture; Latinos Unidos was formed in order to support Hispanic culture and enhance intercultural exchange; Asia Club is a fairly new organization on the Southwestern campus which homes a meeting ground for students that enjoy Asian culture and discussing Asian affairs; SU Native is an organization based around Native American issues and culture with goals to form connections between the SU community and the Native American Georgetown population.
