If you want to be with the “in crowd” at SU, you have to go Greek. Weekend revelries are centered exclusively on frat row. So, if you’re looking for fun on a Friday, you can either head down to the houses or make the drive to Austin. However, the Greek scene at Southwestern is different than at most other schools. Because of deferred rush, first-years and independent students get a chance to become familiarized with the different frats and sororities before committing to one or even deciding to rush. It also makes the whole process a lot more laid-back. Each individual frat and sorority definitely have an image on campus. The frats are notorious for stirring up trouble. In fact, the most recent Greek scandal to hit SU was in the fall of 2004, when the KAs and Phi Delts were caught with strippers in their houses for recruitment activities! The sororities are less easily defined, mostly because they don’t have houses.

Overall, if you want to make lots of friends and get invited to all the “cool” parties, you should probably go Greek. Although it isn’t impossible to reach the highest social echelons at SU without pledging, it sure makes social climbing a lot easier, and besides, it’s just an easy way to make friends. If you don’t care about how wild your weekends are, then you can take Greek or leave it.

The sororities on campus make... The sororities on campus make checking out girls more interesting. The Zetas and Tri Delts are the two ‘stereotypical’ sororities on campus. The Zetas are the most exclusive, and sometimes they’re really snooty, like you should feel special because you’re spending time with them. The Tri Delts are bit more down and dirty—the type of girls who really like freak dancing and beer on the weekends, but wear pearls during the week. The ADPi’s are the ‘nice girls.’ They are generally friendly and tend to party just as much as the Zetas and Tri Delts. Lots of ADPis are involved in activities on campus like choir, theater, and sports. I think the ADPis are probably my favorite sorority. The AXiDs are the smallest chapter, and even though the girls are nice, they still suffer the label as the ‘weird girl’ sorority. 12345 Greek Life Report

Greek life is a huge part of life... Greek life is a huge part of life for about a third of our students. There are lots of social opportunities through Greek life, even though there are not sorority houses. Some sorority members even room with members of other sororities. It is very active, but independents are also not ostracized. Greeks tend to be more active overall than the average student. I’m not a part of a sorority,... I’m not a part of a sorority, though I’m friends with a lot of people that are. I think frat parties seem to be the only place to go sometimes, but there are other options (especially events offered by UPC), and independents seem to find ways of entertaining themselves. 12345 Greek Life Report

Southwestern practices deferred rush, which means that formal rush activities and pledging does not occur until the beginning of the spring semester. The fall semester is host to dozens of official and unofficial recruitment activities that help first-years and independents better acquaint themselves with the different Greek organizations.
