Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Southwestern is the sort of campus where students don’t lock their bikes to the bike racks. There is a general sense of trust within the student body. The campus and student body are small enough that if your bike is stolen, you’re likely to see the culprit riding it to class. Purses are rarely snatched from unattended tables in the Commons. The student body is conscientious and generally adheres to the Honor Code, which extends beyond cheating on papers to things like stealing. While there have been a few rapes on the SU campus, one of them only a few years ago, the Disciplinary Council takes these crimes very seriously, and the offenders are expelled. SU is nestled in the heart of Georgetown, a middle-class small town that goes to church every Sunday. Anybody who wanders onto the grounds that doesn’t belong there is likely to be stopped for a chat by the ubiquitous cops on golf carts. And speaking of the cops on golf carts, they are everywhere. As soon as the sun goes down, there are little white carts zipping all around campus, from frat row up to the Jones Complex. If you’re walking alone at night, chances are good that within 30 seconds of your journey, a cop will pull up and offer you a ride. If it’s a weekend, and you’re walking in the opposite direction of the frat houses, they will insist that they give you a ride to your dorm.

The chauffer service offered by the golf-cart cops is slightly superfluous—the campus is essentially very safe, even in the wee hours of the morning. The sidewalks are all well lit, the school itself is in a good neighborhood, and anyone who wanders onto the campus that doesn’t belong there is quickly apprehended.

Can't Say I've Ever Felt Unsafe on Campus...

I've often walked across campus in the middle of the night without feeling nervous at all. I have never heard anyone have anything major stolen from them, or broken into. If something like that is happening, SUPD would send out a campus-wide email immediately letting people know that something has happened. SUPD rides around at night and day in golf carts, and on weekends they usually patrol around that frats.

Campus Security

Our police work extra hard to make sure we are safe here. The few times we have had incidents on campus they are right there to protect us and to help us recover.

Great Health and Safety

SU has a great health services program and has organizations like Student Health Advisory Council that promote student health on campus. Speaking to safety, SU is extremely safe, some times it almost appears that the SUPD are overly protective.
