In general, Southwestern kids stick to the frats when they want to party. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t go exploring sometimes. While some students make-do by hitting up the local Chili’s bar to hang out, most consider Georgetown completely devoid of nightlife, so they make the trek to downtown Austin for any fun after 10 p.m. There are dozens of clubs and bars downtown, and most of them have live music; Austin is the “Live Music Capital of the World,” after all! Pretty much all the coffeehouses in Austin are hip and bohemian, and most also offer free Wi-Fi Internet service. If you want to party (and not with the Greeks), you’ve gotta go to Austin. A lot of students go to the parties at UT or go dancing at the numerous clubs in downtown Austin. There are also a variety of bars to hang out at and other fun activities. The one downside is that everything usually closes up at 2 a.m., but that is still more than you can find at Georgetown. Unless you want to party down at Wal-Mart, there’s really no reason to stay in Georgetown. In fact, Georgetown and Austin are like polar opposites when it comes to nightlife—Austin rocks, while Georgetown snores.

The fraternity parties on campus are always fun! They try to make sure that there is something going on every weekend and on Wednesday nights as well. |

You have to drive to Austin for bars and clubs, but they do have 6th Street. Happy hour at Chili’s is popular among upperclassmen. Frat parties can be fun, but don’t expect to meet anyone new. |

For parties on campus, you can rely upon the same scene every weekend (and Wednesday) down on frat row. Other than that, you better find a way to get to Austin, or be prepared to sit in your room and watch movies. |

What are you talking about!? Southwestern students don’t drink—okay, that’s a huge lie. The frat houses are basically the only place to go to on the weekends. Some people go to Austin, but why do that, when you can get drunk here and not pay as much or have to worry about driving home? |

Facts
Bar Prowler
Here’s the thing—there is no nightlife in Georgetown. Whether you want to boogie down at a club or get coffee after 9 p.m., you better be prepared to drive all the way to Austin. The other factor is that not many people at Southwestern tend to hit up the club scene—frankly, we’re a school of homebodies. We tend to stick with the frats on the weekends, but if you’re craving some big-city nightlife, Austin, the “Live Music Capital of the World,” certainly has you covered.
Organization Parties
If it is a weekend during the school year some organization is most likely throwing a party. The fraternities are always a dependable source of a good time but they do throw annual parties to look out for such as: the pledge party for each frat with themes changing yearly, the Phi’s Toga and Foam parties and the Pike’s Swamp party. Other organizations that commonly host shindigs are Alpha Phi Omega (the service frarority) and Students for Environmental Activism and Knowledge, or SEAK. For the most part, if one is a member of the organization or not, Facebook invites are sent out to the majority of campus.

What to Do if You're Not 21
There are three Drafthouse locations around Austin, the most popular one being downtown on Colorado Street. At Drafthouse, you don’t just watch movies while eating nachos and drinking beer, you watch really crazy movies while eating nachos and drinking beer! They show many “normal” movies, such as Donnie Darko, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Purple Rain, but they also have special events weekly and monthly. For example, one Thursday a month they have Open Screen Night, where people bring in their own wacky original movies and play them on the big screen. They’ll play anything, no matter how stupid or crass, but watch out that your movie doesn’t get “gonged!” The most hilarious movie wins $100. Drafthouse is also home of Movie-oke (like karaoke, but with movies) and Austin’s Rocky Horror Picture Show Crew, the Queerios (www.austinrocky.org/sac.php).

Special section reserved seating (i.e. good seats) cost $25. (Hint: It’s worth it to splurge the $5.) Show Times: Thursday at 8 p.m., Friday–Saturday at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
