College Prowler Take

While off-campus housing is reasonably obtainable, most students feel that it’s rather pointless. Moving off campus separates you from the campus community, and when you’ve chosen a school based on the fact that it’s small and close-knit, the last thing you want to do is move outside of the loop. Besides, on-campus apartments offer all the privacy of off-campus apartments. The only downside is that on campus, you can still get your parties busted by the SUPD. Those that do live off campus say that they enjoy having the freedom, though the distance and lack of close social structure tends to be a problem.

If you do choose to live off campus, you probably won’t have a hard time finding a place to live. The downside is that you’ll probably end up living in a neighborhood with more families and old people, and less college kids—and that neighborhood is going to be more than walking distance away from campus. And it’s a point well made that there isn’t anything in Georgetown that you’ll really want to live near, except the University. On the upside, it tends to be a lot cheaper to live off campus, and you can get all sorts of freedom and privacy. The thing to consider is that it may be cheaper, you may have your privacy, but will you be having any fun?

Housing off campus isn’t...

Housing off campus isn’t necessarily inconvenient; however, it’s not really worth it. The upperclassman apartments are nice, and you don’t have to bike or drive to campus if you live in them. It’s not like there are many exciting things in Georgetown that you really just have to live near.

I don’t think that many people actually live off campus. My cousin does, and I think he likes it okay. The only problem is that there aren’t really any apartments within walking distance of the school, and it’s really nice to walk right out of your dorm to class. Also, the school has pretty nice apartment-type housing options that give you the same feel, but are still on campus.

Housing off campus is much...

Housing off campus is much cheaper—but you are really separated from events on campus. There are several neighborhoods close enough not to make a difference, but it is hard to find a house up for rent.

Many people go to off-campus housing after their first year. For many, it is a cheaper option than living on campus, with less University-imposed limitations.
